Muurla – Finnish Design Since 1974
Muurla began in 1974 as a glass factory producing mouth-blown glass in the Finnish village of Muurla, founded by Jaakko Uoti, Juhani Ruuskanen, Kalevi Lystimäki, glassmakers Pertti and Olli Kähönen, and designer Tauno Wirkkala. The glass manufactory is located between Helsinki and Turku and, thanks to its location on a major transport route, quickly became a popular stop where visitors could watch the glassmaking process.
Today, the former glass factory has become an internationally renowned design company. The foundation for everything Muurla produces lies in its roots as a glass factory; since then, its vision has been to create beautiful and functional products that bring joy. Over time, Muurla has expanded into additional materials such as enamel and Finnish plywood. Since 2009, Muurla has collaborated with Moomin and offers a wide range of products featuring Moomin characters, including Little My, Snorkmaiden, Moominmamma, and Moominpappa – complemented by the popular Pippi Longstocking figures.
At Nordlichttraum.de, our focus is on Muurla's enamel products – especially mugs, complemented by bowls, buckets, and storage baskets made from recycled PET felt, each featuring the charming designs of Moomin and Pippi Longstocking.
Enamel Mugs – Finnish Collectibles
Muurla's enamel mugs are among the most sought-after classics in Scandinavian homes. Each enamel mug is handmade, which can result in slight variations from one mug to another – a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of experienced artisans. The material is made by coating high-quality carbon steel with ceramic and bonding the two materials together – the result is robust, neutral in taste, and suitable for electric, gas, and induction stoves, as well as ovens and microwaves.
Bowls & Buckets – Enamel for the Whole Home
In addition to mugs, enamel bowls and buckets complete the Muurla range. Whether for serving, storage, or simply as a decorative element in the kitchen – these robust enamel products combine Nordic design with genuine everyday practicality.
Storage Baskets Made from PET Felt – Sustainable and Practical
The storage baskets made from recycled PET felt showcase Muurla's sustainable side: stylish in design and produced with the environment in mind. Perfect for neatly and decoratively storing toys, blankets, or other everyday items.
Moomin & Pippi Longstocking – Childhood Memories for Young and Old
What makes Muurla products so special are their lovingly designed motifs: scenes from Pippi Longstocking or the Moomins adorn the enamel products and evoke childhood memories that are popular with people of all ages. As early as 2010, Muurla produced the first enamel mugs featuring Pippi, becoming highly popular in the far north – since then, many people have discovered their own passion for collecting these colorful designs.
