Friendship – Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden

The Muurla "Friendship" collection shows Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden in quiet moments together. It is about friendship, closeness, care, and the beautiful feeling of simply spending time with one another.

The minimalist black and white design suits this theme very well. The motif has a calm and mature appearance, making it easy to combine with various types of tableware.

20 x 27 cm – the small tray for every day

At 20 x 27 cm, the tray is intentionally compact. It is perfect for serving coffee or tea with a small treat, for breakfast, or for evening snacks.

To me, this is also a lovely size for a small fika: a cup, some pastries, and perhaps a small glass fit perfectly without needing a large serving tray.

Made from Finnish birch veneer

Muurla manufactures its trays in Finland using Finnish birch veneer. The surface is coated with melamine, protecting it for daily use.

The tray is handmade in Finland. I find this worth mentioning specifically for Muurla, as the brand works with different materials and production locations depending on the product line. These trays are among the products that are actually made in Finland.

Dishwasher safe and suitable for everyday use

Despite the wooden material, the tray is dishwasher safe according to Muurla. The melamine coating protects the surface and makes cleaning easy.

Weighing only about 150 grams, the tray is also pleasantly light and can be quickly taken out of the cupboard when you just need to transport a coffee, a glass, or a small snack.

Matching the Friendship cutting and serving board

The Friendship motif is also available at Nordlichttraum on the matching Muurla cutting and serving board. While the board, at 25 x 32 cm, is intended for cutting and arranging food, this smaller tray is ideal for serving drinks and snacks.

Both products are made of Finnish birch veneer and manufactured in Finland, allowing them to be combined beautifully.

My assessment

I find these small 20-x-27-cm trays extremely practical for everyday use. You don't always want to use a large tray for a single cup of coffee or tea—yet the size is sufficient for a drink and some pastries.

I especially like the Friendship motif here. Moomintroll and Snorkmaiden, the calm black-and-white design, and the idea of shared time fit perfectly for me with a small tray for coffee, breakfast, or fika.

And with this product, "Made in Finland" is truly a valid selling point: Finnish birch veneer, handcrafted in Finland, and still dishwasher safe—that is significantly more interesting than just any printed plastic tray.
