Two functions in one birdhouse

The Multiholk is one of the products that made Wildlife Garden famous. Its unique feature lies not only in its design but primarily in its functionality: depending on the season, this same wooden house transforms from a nest box into a sheltered feeding station.

In the spring, the villa offers small garden birds a place to nest. After the breeding season is over, the house is cleaned and converted into a bird feeder for autumn and winter.

A well-thought-out nest box for spring

Wildlife Garden developed the Multiholk with ornithological expertise for small garden birds. Inside, there are ventilation holes as well as climbing notches.

The climbing notches help young birds reach the entrance hole when they are ready to leave the nest. The ventilation helps maintain a suitable climate inside the nest box on warm days.

A bird feeder with 2 liters of volume for autumn and winter

After the breeding season, the villa can be converted into a bird feeder. The interior holds up to 2 liters of bird feed.

An important advantage of this design: the birds do not sit directly in the feed. This reduces the risk of the feed becoming contaminated with bird droppings. At the same time, the feed is better protected from the elements.

Why is the Swedish villa yellow?

In Sweden, yellow and white are by no means random colors for a house. Yellow facades have a long tradition there.

As early as the late 17th century, yellow facade paint was intended to imitate the light-colored sandstone of prestigious buildings in Southern Europe. This developed into a color tradition that can still be found in Swedish wooden houses today.

The Multiholk Villa draws on this very design: yellow facade, white details, and a dark roof. The result is a little Swedish wooden house for the garden.

Mounting on a wall, tree, or post

The Multiholk can be attached to a wall, a tree, or a suitable post. A wall bracket and screws are included in the delivery.

A post is not included. For use as a nest box, Wildlife Garden recommends a mounting height of at least 1.5 meters above the ground.

Cleaning is part of the process

A nest box and a feeding station should be cleaned regularly. Wildlife Garden recommends cleaning the Multiholk at least once a year with warm water and soap, while wearing gloves.

Especially since the villa can be used for both nesting and feeding, cleaning it when switching between these functions is, for me, a matter of course.

Wildlife Garden from Båstad

Wildlife Garden was founded by Helena and Robert Nobel in Båstad, Sweden. The starting point was the idea of developing birdhouses that not only look good but are also consistently geared toward the needs of their feathered inhabitants.

The Multiholk became the starting point for this idea and is still offered today in various house designs.

My assessment

Together with the red Swedish cottage, I consider the villa to be one of the true classics from Wildlife Garden. I have known these Multiholks since the early years of the brand and still find the basic concept convincing.

With the villa in particular, I like that the yellow-white design is not just an arbitrary color variation; it actually references traditional Swedish house colors.

However, the deciding factor for me remains its functionality: a nest box in the spring, and a bird feeder in the autumn and winter. This ensures the villa is not just a decorative garden accessory, but fulfills a concrete task for a large part of the year.
