A birdhouse for all year round

The Multiholk is the original product concept from Wildlife Garden: a birdhouse that performs two different tasks depending on the season.

During the breeding season, the Grey Cottage serves as a nesting box for small garden birds. After the breeding season ends, it can be converted into a bird feeder in just a few simple steps and filled with up to 2 liters of birdseed.

This means you don't need to hang a separate house in the garden for each task.

As a nesting box for small garden birds

The Multiholk was developed with more than just aesthetics in mind. Inside, there are ventilation holes and climbing notches that help young birds reach the entrance hole.

For use as a nesting box, Wildlife Garden recommends a protected position at a height of about 1.5 to 3 meters. The entrance hole should be easily accessible, and the nesting box should not be hung immediately next to a busy feeding station.

A bird feeder for autumn and winter

After the breeding season, the Multiholk is cleaned and converted into a feeder. To do this, the floor plate is removed, the house is filled with birdseed, and then prepared for feeding mode.

The storage container holds up to 2 liters. The design prevents birds from sitting directly in the food. This keeps the food from being contaminated by droppings and reduces the risk of spreading diseases at the feeding station.

Grey Cottage – designed with deliberate restraint

The Grey Cottage is a quieter alternative to the classic red and yellow Multiholks. Gray surfaces, white details, and a dark roof result in a small house that blends unobtrusively into gardens and terraces.

Cleaning and care

For a product that serves as both a nesting box and a bird feeder, regular cleaning is essential. The nesting box should be cleaned after the breeding season ends before it is converted into a bird feeder.

My assessment

Technically, the Grey Cottage hardly differs from the classic Swedish cottage – and that is a good thing. You get the proven Multiholk construction with a nesting box and 2-liter feeder, but opt for a much more restrained design.

I have known the Multiholk since Wildlife Garden's early years. I still find the basic idea compelling: a birdhouse that is not only decorative, but also serves a concrete function throughout the different seasons.

Those who love the classic red of the Swedish cottage will likely choose the original. For those who prefer something a bit quieter and more neutral for their house or garden, I think the Grey Cottage is the more interesting option.
