De Stijl – a birdhouse with unusual architecture

The Multiholk De Stijl is one of the most eye-catching designs in the Wildlife Garden series. Instead of imitating a traditional Swedish wooden house, its design is inspired by the Dutch De Stijl movement.

The three primary colors and the horizontal and vertical geometric shapes define the character of this small house. It creates a deliberate graphic accent amidst the plants and greenery of the garden.

Yet, as with all Multiholks from Wildlife Garden, behind the unusual facade is a functional birdhouse.

A nesting box in spring

The Multiholk was developed with ornithological expertise for small garden birds up to about the size of a sparrow.

During the breeding season, the house is used as a nesting box. Well-thought-out interior details support its function as a protected place for raising fledglings.

In this way, Wildlife Garden remains true to its original philosophy: the design may be striking, but it must be secondary to the function for the birds.

A bird feeder in autumn and winter

After the breeding season ends, the Multiholk can be converted into a bird feeder. The nesting box should be thoroughly cleaned beforehand.

The feeder holds up to 2 liters of bird seed. The design is constructed so that the birds remain outside the actual feed chamber while eating. This reduces contamination of the feed by bird droppings, making the feeding station more hygienic to operate.

A Multiholk for modern gardens

The various Multiholk models beautifully demonstrate how different a functional birdhouse can look. The Swedish cottage and villa capture traditional architectural forms, while the Bauhaus and De Stijl models consciously move in a more modern direction.

With the De Stijl, subtlety is not the priority. The clear surfaces, geometric lines, and bold primary colors make the birdhouse itself a small design element in the garden.

Mounting on a wall, tree, or post

The Multiholk De Stijl can be attached to a wall, a tree, or a suitable post.

A wall bracket and screws are included. A post is not included.

Wood for use in the garden

Wildlife Garden makes the Multiholk De Stijl from wood and treats the surface with water-based paint.

Wood is a natural material. Small differences in structure and surface are therefore possible and do not constitute a quality defect.

My assessment

To me, the De Stijl is one of the most distinctive Multiholks from Wildlife Garden. Its function is the same as the classic Swedish cottage – but visually, the two models could hardly be more different.

That is precisely what I like about the series. Wildlife Garden does not try to offer every customer the same birdhouse in a different color, but rather combines proven construction with different architectural styles.

Anyone looking for the most inconspicuous birdhouse possible will likely choose a different model. However, those who appreciate clear forms, bold colors, and modern design get a Multiholk with the De Stijl that stands out in the garden even without avian visitors.
