A Swedish barn for your garden birds

The feeding barn is one of the early products from Wildlife Garden that remains a signature piece to this day. Its inspiration is unmistakable: a traditional Swedish wooden barn with a red facade, white details, and a dark roof.

Behind the playful architecture lies a highly sophisticated bird feeder. Instead of offering just one container for bird food, Wildlife Garden designed the barn so that different types of food can be provided simultaneously.

Four feeding areas for different preferences

Not every garden bird prefers the same food. This is exactly where the strength of the feeding barn lies.

The various areas can be filled with grain mixes, sunflower seeds, peanuts, suet balls, or insect food, for example. In total, the barn has space for around 5 liters of bird food.

A varied selection of food allows you to create a feeding station for different garden birds without having to set up multiple individual feeders.

Sophisticated feeding instead of an open tray

Wildlife Garden has also paid attention to hygiene at the feeding site during the design process. The feeding barn was developed according to the guidelines of the Swedish National Veterinary Institute (SVA).

Birds do not sit directly in the food while eating. This reduces the contamination of the food supply by bird droppings and helps prevent the potential spread of pathogens.

The wide-overhanging roof also protects the feeding areas from rain and snow.

Easy to fill and clean

The roof of the feeding barn can be removed. This makes the individual feeding areas easily accessible for simple filling or cleaning.

Cleaning is especially important for a regularly visited feeding station. Food residues and dirt should therefore be removed regularly.

On a post, wall, or tree

The feeding barn can be attached to a suitable post, or mounted on a wall or tree.

I personally find it looks most beautiful when free-standing on a post. Not only does this showcase the shape of the little barn, but it also makes it particularly easy to observe the bird activity around the various feeding spots.

Wildlife Garden – Function and design go hand in hand

The feeding barn demonstrates perfectly what characterizes the early products from Wildlife Garden. Helena Nobel did not want to design purely utilitarian birdhouses for the garden. She believed functional products for wildlife should be designed in a way that makes you enjoy seeing them in your own garden.

This approach led not only to the "Multiholk" but also to the large feeding barns – products that made Wildlife Garden famous well beyond Sweden at an early stage.

My assessment

I have associated the feeding barn with Wildlife Garden since the brand's early years. I know the product from my long-standing work with Scandinavian brands and have seen firsthand how in-demand these feeders were at times.

This still doesn't surprise me. The red barn looks exceptionally beautiful, but it doesn't rely on its appearance alone. Four distinct feeding areas, approximately 5 liters of volume, a protected food supply, and a well-thought-out design make it a true feeding station.

At about 2.1 kg, it is also a surprisingly solid piece of woodwork. If you want to observe multiple bird species in your garden and offer different types of food, this is, for me, one of the most iconic products in the history of Wildlife Garden.
