One of our most distinctive birds
With the hoopoe, you don't need to be an expert bird watcher to recognize that there is something special sitting in front of you. Its large crest, long, slightly curved beak, and the bold black and white pattern on the wings create a silhouette that can hardly be confused with any other European bird species.
Wildlife Garden has brought out exactly these striking features in their hand-carved DecoBird.
The Hoopoe – Upupa epops
The hoopoe is a heat-loving bird that is also found in parts of Europe. It prefers open, varied landscapes where it can find suitable nesting sites and sufficient food.
It breeds in existing cavities – for example, in tree holes or suitable crevices. The hoopoe does not need an elaborately built nest.
The crest makes it unmistakable
The most striking feature of the hoopoe is its large crest. When at rest, it can lie relatively flat against the head. When excited or attentive, however, the bird fans out its feathers.
Together with the dark feather tips, this creates the characteristic crown that defines the appearance of the hoopoe.
Wildlife Garden shows the bird with its crest clearly raised – exactly the posture in which its extraordinary character is best showcased.
The long beak is its tool
The long, narrow, and slightly downward-curved beak is not just a visual feature. The hoopoe uses it specifically as a tool when foraging for food.
Its diet consists mainly of insects and other small invertebrates. It can use its long beak to search for prey in the ground and among plant debris.
Here, too, it is beautifully demonstrated how directly the unusual body shape is related to the bird's way of life.
Black and white wings and warm natural tones
In addition to the crest, the plumage pattern is the second major identifying feature of the hoopoe.
The head and body show warm beige, orange, and brown tones, while the wings and tail form a clear contrast with a bold black and white pattern.
This makes the hoopoe one of the DecoBirds where both the carving and the painting catch the eye immediately.
24.4 cm long and 156 grams heavy
The DecoBird hoopoe measures 24.4 × 6.6 × 15.4 cm and weighs around 156 g.
At 24.4 cm in length, it is already one of the larger DecoBirds. Due to its relatively slim body, however, the weight remains at 156 g, well below that of the large owls or falcons.
It is precisely this combination of long beak, crest, and slim body shape that makes the hoopoe appear larger without the figure becoming particularly heavy.
Hand-carved from linden wood
Wildlife Garden crafts the hoopoe by hand from linden wood. The finely and evenly grained wood is one of the classic carving woods and is particularly well-suited for figurative work and small details.
The figure is then hand-painted with water-based paints.
The design of the hoopoe demands a lot: the crest, long beak, fine plumage structure, and the high-contrast black and white wing pattern must all fit together so that the typical character of the bird is preserved.
Due to the artisanal production and the natural material, slight differences in wood grain, carving, and painting may occur. They are part of the individual character of each figure.
For indoor use
Following the current direction of the DecoBird series, the hand-carved hoopoe is intended as a decorative figure for indoor use.
At 24.4 cm in length, it has enough presence to stand alone on a sideboard, a dresser, or a larger shelf. However, due to its extraordinary silhouette, it works just as well among other European DecoBirds.
With information on the bird species
The DecoBird comes with a brochure containing information about the hoopoe. The figure is delivered in a closed cardboard box.
With this model, too, Wildlife Garden combines craftsmanship with information about the real bird that served as a model.
My assessment
For me, the hoopoe is one of those DecoBirds where you immediately understand why this series works. Wildlife Garden doesn't have to invent anything or decoratively exaggerate here – the real bird already looks extraordinary enough.
The raised crest, the long curved beak, and the black and white wings give the figure a unique character from every angle. Added to this is the length of 24.4 cm: the hoopoe is large enough to look really good even on its own.
And although it is significantly more striking in color than many of our native brown songbirds, nothing looks artificial. Nature actually built this unusual combination exactly that way. For me, this is one of the visually strongest DecoBirds in the series.
