31-centimeter peregrine falcon – this DecoBird needs no companion
The peregrine falcon is one of the DecoBirds that has a completely different impact due to its size compared to the small songbirds in the series.
At 31 cm tall and weighing around 650 g, the hand-carved figure is an independent decorative object. The upright body, the typical falcon head, and the focused gaze give the bird a calm yet distinctly powerful presence.
Peregrine falcon – Falco peregrinus
The peregrine falcon is one of the best-known birds of prey. It is famous above all for its extraordinary speed when hunting.
Instead of simply chasing its prey in level flight, the peregrine falcon can transition into an extremely fast dive from a great height. In doing so, it reaches speeds that make it one of the fastest birds in the world.
Wildlife Garden cites speeds of up to 350 km/h.
Speed as a hunting strategy
The peregrine falcon mainly hunts other birds. It does not use its speed indiscriminately, but in a very targeted manner.
It observes its surroundings from an elevated position or from a great altitude. Once it has spotted suitable prey, it can transition into its characteristic dive and strike the prey in mid-air.
This represents a completely different hunting strategy than, for example, an owl, which relies primarily on hearing and silent flight in the dark.
From cliffs to high-rises
Peregrine falcons originally prefer to breed on steep cliff faces and other hard-to-reach elevated locations.
In the meantime, however, some peregrine falcons have also discovered our cities for themselves. Tall buildings can serve a similar function there as natural cliff faces.
Wildlife Garden points out that peregrine falcons occasionally breed on high-rise buildings and simultaneously find a rich food supply there in the form of city pigeons.
A bird of prey with a clear silhouette
With the peregrine falcon, a wooden figure does not need to use bright colors. The body shape, head, and plumage markings are what matter.
The compact body and the typical falcon head make the bird of prey immediately recognizable. The various gray, brown, cream, and darker shades give the hand-painted plumage its structure.
31 cm tall and 650 grams heavy
At 22.5 × 9.9 × 31.0 cm, the peregrine falcon is one of the largest DecoBirds in our assortment. Its size is even more evident from its weight of around 650 g.
This specification is particularly important when buying online. A product photo rarely conveys whether a carved bird figure weighs 50, 300, or more than 600 grams.
The peregrine falcon is therefore not a small figure that disappears somewhere between other decorative objects. It needs some space and works perfectly well on its own on a sideboard, a dresser, a larger shelf, or a desk.
Hand-carved and hand-painted
Wildlife Garden has the peregrine falcon carved by hand from wood and then carefully painted with water-based colors.
For a large bird of prey like this, proportions are particularly noticeable. The head, body, plumage structure, and posture must match to create the typical appearance of a peregrine falcon.
Due to the artisanal production and the natural material, small differences in the wood grain, carving, and painting may occur. They are part of the individual character of each figure.
Merlin and peregrine falcon – two very different falcons
With the merlin and the peregrine falcon, Wildlife Garden shows two representatives of the same bird family that are already clearly distinct in their appearance.
The merlin is Europe's smallest falcon and was depicted by Wildlife Garden at a height of 20.9 cm. The peregrine falcon as a DecoBird, by contrast, reaches a full 31 cm.
Placed next to each other, one can see very nicely how different even two falcon species can appear.
For indoor use
According to the current direction of the DecoBird series, the hand-carved peregrine falcon is intended as a decorative figure for indoor use.
At 31 cm tall and weighing 650 g, it is one of the figures that should be given some space. For that, it requires no other DecoBirds to make an impact.
With information about the bird species
The DecoBird includes a brochure with information about the peregrine falcon. The figure is delivered in a closed cardboard box.
With this large bird of prey, Wildlife Garden also combines artisanal craftsmanship with information about the real bird that served as the model.
My assessment
With the peregrine falcon, I wouldn't even try to help things along with big marketing words. 31 cm in height and 650 g quite clearly state what kind of figure you are getting here.
I also like that Wildlife Garden does not show the falcon in an artificially dramatic attack scene. It sits there calmly and attentively. Anyone who knows that this bird belongs to the fastest animals in existence when in a dive doesn't really need any extra drama.
I also find the comparison with our merlin interesting. The merlin shows the small, compact representative of this bird family, while the peregrine falcon at 31 cm and 650 g already develops a completely different presence. For me, this is clearly one of the DecoBirds that makes the strongest impact as a single figure.
