A bird that is at home on the tree trunk
Wildlife Garden made a particularly good choice with the Eurasian treecreeper: this bird does not simply stand on its feet. It is shown exactly as you would encounter it in nature – climbing vertically on a tree trunk.
This makes the WG4443 stand out from many other DecoBirds at first glance, while simultaneously highlighting one of the most important characteristics of this bird species.
The Eurasian treecreeper – Certhia familiaris
The Eurasian treecreeper is perfectly adapted to a life on tree trunks. It grips the bark with its feet, while its relatively long and stiff tail provides additional support for its body while climbing.
The small bird typically moves up the trunk, systematically searching the bark for food.
Once it has explored a tree sufficiently, it often flies to the lower part of the next trunk – and begins its upward journey all over again.
The curved beak is its tool
A particularly characteristic feature of the Eurasian treecreeper is its slender, slightly downward-curved beak.
It uses this to pick small insects, spiders, and other invertebrates out of cracks and crevices in the tree bark. Wildlife Garden has clearly captured this typical beak shape in the wooden figure.
Form and function are intrinsically linked in this bird – which is precisely why the Eurasian treecreeper is such an interesting subject for a carved figure.
Perfectly adapted to tree bark
The plumage pattern also serves a practical purpose. The brown, light, and dark sections make the Eurasian treecreeper appear remarkably inconspicuous on textured tree bark.
Unlike a goldfinch or an oriole, this bird does not thrive on flashy colors. Its strength lies in its camouflage.
It is often only noticed once the Eurasian treecreeper starts moving along the trunk.
A completely different shape than the standing DecoBirds
The figure measures 10.0 × 4.0 × 13.0 cm and weighs around 104 g.
The 13 cm height is not simply due to an upright-standing bird. The Eurasian treecreeper sits directly on its tree trunk, which gives the figure an unusual vertical shape.
This makes it particularly interesting among classic standing DecoBirds: its very silhouette tells a story about the bird's way of life.
104 grams – small, but surprisingly substantial
At 104 g, the Eurasian treecreeper is by no means particularly light for its compact dimensions. This is, of course, also due to the tree trunk, which is an integral part of the overall wooden figure.
I find this information important, especially when buying online. It is difficult to judge from pictures whether you are holding a very light little bird figure or a somewhat more substantial carved object in your hand.
Hand-carved and hand-painted
Wildlife Garden has the Eurasian treecreeper carved by hand from wood and then painted with water-based paints.
Small details are particularly important for this species: the thin curved beak, the plumage pattern, the long tail, and, of course, the typical posture on the tree trunk.
Due to the artisanal production process and natural materials, slight variations in wood structure, carving, and painting may occur. They are part of the individual character of each DecoBird.
For indoor use
According to the current direction of the DecoBird series, the hand-carved Eurasian treecreeper is intended as a decorative figure for indoor use.
Thanks to its narrow and vertical shape, it requires very little shelf space and is well-suited for a bookshelf, dresser, desk, or windowsill.
With a brochure on the bird species
The DecoBird includes a brochure with information about the Eurasian treecreeper. The figure is delivered in a gift box with a display window.
In this way, Wildlife Garden combines the hand-carved wooden figure with knowledge about the real bird and its way of life in this model as well.
My assessment
For me, the Eurasian treecreeper is one of those DecoBirds for which the depiction is particularly well-chosen. Simply placing a Eurasian treecreeper on two feet like a titmouse wouldn't really do this bird justice.
Here, on the other hand, you understand what makes it special just by looking at it: it belongs on a tree trunk. The curved beak, the long tail, and the vertical posture all come together to form a coherent image.
And you shouldn't underestimate the 104 g. The figure is only 13 cm high, but thanks to the carved-in tree trunk, it is much more substantial than many small songbirds in the series. For me, this is one of those DecoBirds where Wildlife Garden has combined nature observation and carving artistry beautifully.
