The mallard – almost everyone knows it

Hardly any other duck is as familiar to us as the mallard. You encounter them on lakes, ponds, rivers, and in city parks – often surprisingly close to humans.

Identifying the drake is particularly easy. Its iridescent green head, white neck ring, and strong shades of brown, gray, and black make the male unmistakable.

Wildlife Garden has captured this very striking coloring in its large DecoBird mallard drake.

Mallard – Anas platyrhynchos

The mallard is a dabbling duck. Unlike diving ducks, it searches for a large part of its food on or immediately below the water surface.

Almost everyone has likely witnessed the typical "dabbling" behavior, where the duck keeps its front body under water and its tail points upward.

Mallards are omnivores. Their natural diet includes aquatic plants, seeds, and small animals living in the water.

Drake and hen – a clear difference in mallards

In a mallard pair, males and females are particularly easy to distinguish.

During breeding plumage, the drake sports the striking, iridescent green head and appears much more contrast-rich overall. The female, on the other hand, possesses predominantly brown-patterned plumage, which provides excellent camouflage while nesting.

Wildlife Garden has created both genders as individual DecoBirds. This allows drakes and hens to also be combined as a pair.

Nearly life-size

At 24.8 cm long, the mallard drake is one of the larger figures within the DecoBird series. Wildlife Garden describes it as a life-size depiction.

This significantly changes its impact compared to the small songbirds. A tit or a robin can easily stand among other decorative objects – the mallard needs a bit more space and acts as a standalone object on its own.

Carved and painted by hand

Wildlife Garden carves the mallard by hand from wood. The figure is then hand-painted with water-based colors.

With the drake, the paint job is particularly important. The characteristic green head stands in clear contrast to the brown, gray, and dark plumage areas of the body.

Due to the artisanal production and the natural material, small differences in wood grain, carving, and paint may occur. They are part of the figure's individual character.

My assessment

For me, the mallard is a beautiful example that Wildlife Garden has mastered more than just small songbirds. At 24.8 cm long and nearly 400 g, you have a completely different kind of wooden figure in front of you.

With the drake, there is, of course, the color. The green head is the feature by which almost everyone immediately recognizes the male mallard. That is precisely why the painting here must not only be decorative – it must match the real bird.

I find it particularly interesting that Wildlife Garden has created the drake, the hen, and even the mallard duckling individually. You can therefore choose the striking drake or assemble the little mallard family piece by piece.
