One of our most colorful native birds

With the goldfinch, Wildlife Garden is allowed to work with color. The bright red facial mask, the black and white head, and the strong yellow markings on the black wings make this small bird almost unmistakable.

This makes the goldfinch one of those DecoBirds where you don't have to think long about which bird species is being depicted.

Goldfinch or thistle finch?

Both names refer to the same bird: Carduelis carduelis. The name "thistle finch" already points to one of its preferred food sources.

With its slender, pointed beak, the goldfinch can extract seeds from thistles and other plant heads. This is why it is frequently observed in late summer and autumn where withered wild plants bear their seeds.

A bird that loves seeds

The goldfinch feeds primarily on plant seeds. Thistles are particularly well-known, but by no means its only food source.

Its relatively long and pointed beak is excellently suited for reaching seeds that are more difficult for other birds to access.

This also explains why nature-friendly gardens with left-over seed heads can be interesting for this colorful finch.

Sociable

Outside the breeding season, goldfinches are often not on their own. They gather in small groups and search for suitable feeding grounds together.

Between dry thistles and other seed heads, the red, yellow, and black marked birds can offer an astonishingly colorful sight.

11.2 cm long and only 41 grams light

The DecoBird goldfinch measures 11.2 × 4.9 × 8.9 cm and weighs around 41 g. This makes it one of the small and light figures in the series.

The size and weight specifications are particularly helpful when buying online: despite its intense color effect, the goldfinch is a compact wooden figure that requires little shelf space.

Hand-carved from linden wood

The goldfinch belongs to the classic DecoBird series from Wildlife Garden and is carved from linden wood. The finely and evenly structured wood is very well-suited for small decorative carvings.

The bird is then hand-painted with water-based paints.

For the goldfinch, the painting is especially important. The red facial mask, black and white head, and yellow wing markings must be clearly defined from one another, despite the small size of the figure, so that the typical character of the bird is preserved.

Due to the hand-craftsmanship and natural material, small differences in wood structure, carving, and painting may occur.

Standing or in flight

Wildlife Garden offers the goldfinch in two very different representations. This model, WG406, shows the bird in the classic standing position.

With the flying goldfinch WG4442, however, the focus is on spread wings and flight movement. This makes the two figures look completely different despite being the same bird species.

With the standing version, the characteristic head and face markings can be admired particularly well.

For indoor use

For our current product description, we list the hand-carved goldfinch as a decorative figure for indoor use.

With its compact dimensions, it easily finds a place on a windowsill, shelf, desk, or dresser and combines very well with other small European DecoBirds.

With a brochure on the bird species

The DecoBird comes with a brochure containing information about the goldfinch. The figure is delivered in a gift box with a viewing window.

In this way, Wildlife Garden reconnects the hand-carved wooden figure with information about the real bird that served as the model.

My assessment

For me, the goldfinch is one of those DecoBirds where color is truly a selling point. On just 11.2 cm, this small bird brings together red, yellow, black, white, and various natural tones—and yet the design does not look artificial. The real bird actually looks like this.

I also find it interesting that we at Nordlichttraum have both versions: the classic standing goldfinch and the flying goldfinch. It's not just the same figure in a different position. With the standing bird, the face is particularly noticeable; in the flying model, the yellow wing markings become much more dominant.

At 41 g, WG406 is one of the smaller DecoBirds. That is precisely why I find it beautiful in combination with other native species—it certainly won't be hiding in terms of color.
