The thrush that repeats its melodies
The song thrush is aptly named. Its varied song is one of the most noticeable voices in gardens, parks, and forests.
Its way of singing is particularly characteristic: individual short motifs are repeated several times before the song thrush moves on to the next sequence of notes. Once you have consciously heard this pattern, it becomes much easier to recognize its song outdoors.
The song thrush – Turdus philomelos
Like the blackbird, the song thrush belongs to the thrush family. Visually, however, it is marked quite differently.
Its upper side shows understated shades of brown, while the light-colored breast and underside are covered with numerous dark spots. Wildlife Garden has carefully captured this very characteristic pattern in the hand-painted wooden figure.
A bird with its own "workshop"
A particularly interesting trait of the song thrush can be seen in its foraging. Snails are part of its diet – however, their hard shells initially pose a problem.
The song thrush solves this in a remarkable way: it strikes the snail shell repeatedly against a suitable stone until it breaks and it can get to the snail.
Such regularly used stones are known as "thrush anvils." Numerous remains of broken snail shells can accumulate around these spots.
Not every spotted thrush is a song thrush
At first glance, the song thrush can be confused with other thrush species. The combination of a relatively compact shape, warm brown upper side, and the striking dark spots on the light underside are among its typical identifying features.
At the latest when the bird begins to sing, identification often becomes easier: the repeatedly sung motifs are particularly characteristic of the song thrush.
16.5 cm long wooden figure weighing 98 grams
The DecoBird measures 16.5 × 5 × 12 cm and weighs around 98 g. This makes the song thrush significantly larger and more substantial than the small tits and finches in the series.
Weight in particular is a helpful piece of information when purchasing online. Product images only provide a limited impression of the actual size and substance of a hand-carved wooden figure.
Hand-carved from linden wood
The song thrush belongs to the classic DecoBird series by Wildlife Garden and is carved from linden wood. The fine and evenly textured wood is particularly well-suited for figurative carvings and fine surface details.
The bird is then painted by hand. For the song thrush, the challenge lies less in spectacular colors than in the natural plumage pattern: the many dark spots on the light underside significantly determine the appearance of the bird.
Due to the manual craftsmanship and natural material, small differences in wood structure, carving, and painting may occur. They are part of the individual character of each DecoBird.
For indoor use
According to the current usage recommendation for the DecoBird series, the hand-carved song thrush is intended for indoor use.
With a length of 16.5 cm, it has enough presence to stand alone on a shelf, a windowsill, a desk, or a chest of drawers. At the same time, it can be beautifully combined with other native DecoBirds.
With a brochure on the bird species
The DecoBird includes a brochure with information about the song thrush. The hand-carved wooden figure is delivered in a gift box with a display window.
In this way, Wildlife Garden reconnects the decorative figure with knowledge about the real bird and its way of life.
My assessment
For me, the song thrush is a beautiful example that an interesting DecoBird does not need spectacular colors. Brown, cream, and dark spots – that doesn't sound particularly exciting at first.
The bird becomes interesting through its behavior. The repeated motifs of its song are typical, and the so-called "thrush anvil" is one of those little stories from nature that you remember immediately.
With a length of 16.5 cm and 98 g, the figure also already has significantly more substance than the small DecoBirds. For me, this is a very coherent implementation of a native bird species, where Wildlife Garden works not through color, but through form and true-to-nature markings.
