The face makes the barn owl unmistakable

In hardly any other owl is the face as characteristic as in the barn owl. The pale, heart-shaped facial disc frames the dark eyes and gives the bird its unmistakable expression.

Wildlife Garden has made this very feature the focal point of the hand-carved figure. The calm, upright posture, the pale face, and the warm brown and beige tones of the plumage result in an owl with amazing presence.

The Barn Owl – Tyto alba

The barn owl is a medium-sized owl species and is widely distributed across various parts of the world. It prefers open landscapes and likes to use buildings such as barns, church towers, and older structures as nesting and resting places.

As a result, it has lived relatively close to humans for a long time – even though one rarely gets a conscious look at the predominantly nocturnal bird itself.

A nearly silent hunter of the night

Barn owls mainly forage for food in the dark. Their prey consists primarily of small mammals such as mice and other small rodents.

Especially fascinating is their nearly silent flight. The special structure of the owl's feathers reduces flight noise and helps the bird approach its prey unnoticed.

At the same time, their excellent hearing plays an important role in hunting. The barn owl can locate prey even in very low-light conditions.

Why the heart-shaped facial disc looks like more than just beauty

The striking facial disc is not just a visual identifier. Its shape helps the barn owl direct sound to its ears.

Thus, the bird's most beautiful feature is also part of its highly specialized equipment for nocturnal hunting.

22.3 cm tall and 510 grams in weight

At 15.2 × 9.8 × 22.3 cm, the barn owl is one of the large DecoBirds. Even more significant is its weight: the hand-carved wooden figure tips the scales at around 510 g.

This specification is particularly important when buying online. A product photo barely conveys whether a wooden figure weighs 50 or more than 500 grams. The barn owl is not a small, lightweight bird decoration, but a remarkably substantial figure.

Because of its height and weight, it works excellently as a standalone object on a sideboard, bookshelf, desk, or dresser.

Hand-carved from linden wood

Wildlife Garden crafts the barn owl by hand from linden wood. This finely and evenly textured wood is one of the classic materials for figurative wood carving.

On this figure, individual feather areas have been visibly carved out. The owl is then painted by hand with water-based acrylic paint. Inserted glass eyes enhance the calm, concentrated expression.

Due to the manual labor, small differences in wood grain, carving, and painting may occur. These are part of the artisanal character of every single DecoBird.

An owl in a calm, attentive posture

Wildlife Garden avoids a dramatic hunting scene with the barn owl. Instead, the bird stands calm and upright.

This fits the figure very well: the pale facial disc, the dark eyes, and the finely carved feathers are given enough space. The barn owl appears attentive without its posture needing to be overly staged.

For indoor use

Wildlife Garden explicitly recommends the barn owl for indoor use. It is suitable, for example, for a bookshelf, sideboard, dresser, or desk.

For care, the manufacturer recommends a soft, dry cloth. Abrasive cleaning agents should not be used.

With information about the bird species

Included with the DecoBird is a booklet containing information about the barn owl. With this, Wildlife Garden reconnects the hand-carved wooden figure with knowledge about the real bird that served as the model.

My assessment

For me, the barn owl is one of the DecoBirds where the weight must be front and center. A height of 22.3 cm is already impressive – but only the 510 g makes clear what a substantial wooden figure you are actually getting here.

In terms of design, I particularly like that Wildlife Garden did not try to make the owl artificially spectacular. The heart-shaped facial disc and the large dark eyes are more than enough. Anyone familiar with a barn owl will recognize it immediately.

And at 99 euros, it naturally falls into a different category than a small blue tit or a robin. However, you also get a correspondingly large, heavy, and intricately crafted figure that can easily stand on its own and does not need a group of other DecoBirds to make an impact.
