Two tiny hummingbirds in the air

With the Rufous Hummingbird, movement is the focus. Wildlife Garden therefore does not simply provide the same bird twice, but two differently designed hummingbirds in a flying posture.

At 8 and 9 cm in length respectively, both wooden birds are extremely small. Thanks to the hanger, they still look very lively – especially when both birds are presented with some distance between them.

The Rufous Hummingbird – Selasphorus rufus

Behind the slightly unusual-sounding name lies a small North American hummingbird. In English, the species is called the "Rufous Hummingbird," in Swedish "Rostkolibri" (rust hummingbird).

The different names allude to the warm rust-brown, reddish, and orange plumage tones that are particularly noticeable in the male.

Wildlife Garden picks up exactly this warm color effect in the two hand-painted wooden birds.

Tiny – but anything but inconspicuous

Wildlife Garden states a body size of about 7 to 9 cm and a weight of only 2 to 5 g for the real bird.

This makes the Rufous Hummingbird one of the truly small birds. However, its small body size should not be confused with an inconspicuous appearance: the strong, warm plumage colors and the typical hummingbird shape ensure high recognition value.

A bird of the North American West Coast

The Rufous Hummingbird is native to western North America. Wildlife Garden cites open landscapes, parks, gardens, and forests as habitats during the breeding season.

This distinguishes this DecoBird significantly from our European garden and forest birds and brings a North American bird species into the collection.

The special flight art of hummingbirds

Like hardly any other bird family, hummingbirds are associated with hovering flight. Their wing movements allow them to remain virtually motionless in the air.

This is precisely why the hanging presentation works so well. Simply placing a Rufous Hummingbird sitting on a branch would only show a small part of what makes this bird species so fascinating.

Two different flight postures

The set consists of two differently designed birds. Bird A measures 9 × 4 × 3 cm, Bird B 8 × 3 × 3 cm.

Both have a hemp hanger on their backs. This allows them to be presented, for example, on a decorative branch, in front of a window, or freely in the room.

Especially as a pair, more movement is created than with a single figure. The birds do not have to hang exactly side-by-side – slightly different heights and distances look more natural.

Hand-carved and hand-painted

Both hummingbirds are carved from wood by hand and then painted with water-based colors.

With such small figures, proportions are particularly important. The slim body, the long beak, and the suggested flight movement must remain recognizable even within a few centimeters.

Due to the manual production process, small differences in wood structure, carving, and paintwork may occur. They are part of the character of the DecoBird series.

For indoor use

The Rufous Hummingbirds are intended as hanging decorations for indoor use.

Wildlife Garden suggests, among other things, decorative branches, window decorations, and other selected places in the living area for its flying DecoBirds.

With a brochure on the bird species

The 2-piece set includes a brochure with information about the bird species depicted. The two hand-carved hummingbirds are delivered in a gift box with a display window.

My assessment

I find the Wildlife Garden 2-piece sets for hummingbirds particularly successful. A single small bird at 8 or 9 cm could easily look a bit lost. Two differently designed birds, on the other hand, immediately create movement.

The Rufous Hummingbird itself is also interesting. It does not need the spectacular blue and green tones of some other hummingbirds. The warm rust-brown and orange tones give it a character all its own.

And this is precisely where the hanging version suits me better than a classic bird figure on feet: after all, you associate a hummingbird first and foremost with its extraordinary flight. Wildlife Garden therefore leaves both where they belong – in the air.
