A little bird that almost everyone recognizes

With the robin, you really don't need any complicated distinguishing features. The bright orange-red coloring of the face and breast makes the little bird unmistakable.

Added to this are the rather round body shape, the fine beak, and the large dark eyes. Wildlife Garden has captured exactly these features in its hand-carved DecoBird.

The European robin – Erithacus rubecula

Robins are among the familiar birds of our gardens, parks, and forests. They especially like to stay in areas with shrubs, hedges, and dense undergrowth.

Despite their striking breast coloring, they can be surprisingly inconspicuous there. Often, movement or song gives away the little bird before you consciously discover it.

Friendly to us – not necessarily to other robins

Robins often appear surprisingly tame to humans. When working in the garden, a bird might wait at a short distance, attentively observing the freshly moved soil.

Among fellow robins, things look different. Robins defend their territory and react quite energetically to intruders.

The friendly appearance should therefore not be deceiving: there is a fair amount of self-confidence in this little bird.

The red breast also serves as a signal

The orange-red breast is not just a good identification feature for us humans. The striking coloring also plays a role in encounters between robins.

This gives the bird's most famous feature a second meaning: it doesn't just look beautiful, but is part of its communication with other robins.

A bird with a special closeness to humans

Robins have an interesting strategy for foraging. They observe where the ground is being churned up and small soil-dwelling animals become accessible.

What is done today by a human with a spade or garden hoe is taken over in nature by larger animals, for example. For the robin, following such activities can pay off.

Perhaps it is precisely this behavior that contributes to the fact that we often perceive robins as particularly tame.

Hand-carved from linden wood

Wildlife Garden crafts the robin by hand from linden wood. The fine and evenly textured wood is one of the classic materials for figurative carving.

The figure is then painted by hand with water-based paints. For the robin, the transition between the bold orange-red breast and the subdued brown and gray tones of the rest of the plumage is, of course, particularly important.

Small differences in wood grain, carving, and painting are part of the artisanal production process and make every DecoBird slightly unique.

12.4 cm long and 50 grams heavy

The robin measures 12.4 × 4.9 × 8.8 cm and weighs around 50 g. This makes it one of the compact DecoBirds, requiring only a small footprint.

The rather round shape fits very well with the natural appearance of the bird and differs significantly from slimmer species like wagtails or swallows.

For indoor use

According to the current usage recommendation for the DecoBird series, the hand-carved and hand-painted wooden figure is intended for indoor use.

With its compact dimensions, the robin easily finds a place on a windowsill, a shelf, a chest of drawers, or a desk.

With a booklet about the bird species

The DecoBird comes with a booklet containing information about the robin. The figure is delivered in a gift box with a display window.

In this way, Wildlife Garden combines the handcrafted wooden figure with information about the real bird.

My assessment

For me, the robin is one of the classics of the DecoBird series. You don't have to explain to anyone for long which bird the figure is supposed to represent – the orange-red breast does that practically on its own.

I find the character behind it almost more interesting. To us humans, a robin can seem surprisingly trusting; towards another robin, the friendly little garden visitor quickly becomes a persistent defender of its territory.

It is precisely such details that make the DecoBirds interesting to me. You first buy a beautiful hand-carved wooden figure, and you might take a closer look the next time you see a real robin in the garden.
