A bird you can hardly miss – if you see it

Bright yellow body, black wings, and a respectable size: the golden oriole should really be one of the most eye-catching birds in our landscape.

In practice, it is not that easy to spot. The golden oriole prefers to stay in the dense foliage of treetops. There, even the male's vibrant yellow can disappear surprisingly well among the leaves and light.

The golden oriole – Oriolus oriolus

The male golden oriole's plumage pattern is unmistakable. The intense yellow of the body contrasts sharply with the black wings and other dark plumage areas.

The female is colored much more modestly. Wildlife Garden has chosen the significantly more striking male for its DecoBird.

This is precisely why the golden oriole is one of the most expressive birds in the DecoBird series in terms of color.

Often heard before it is seen

The golden oriole has a characteristic, melodious, fluting call. Because it frequently stays high up and well-hidden in leafy treetops, its voice often reveals its presence long before you discover the bird itself.

This makes it an interesting contrast to the nightingale: both birds are excellent at eluding direct observation – which you wouldn't initially expect from the golden oriole given its spectacular color.

A summer guest from the south

The golden oriole is a migratory bird and spends only the warmer months in its European breeding grounds. Its wintering grounds are in Africa.

It is therefore one of those bird species whose appearance is closely associated with spring and summer.

My assessment

To me, the golden oriole is one of those DecoBirds where you initially think: you should be able to spot this bird outside immediately. Bright yellow, black wings, and over 20 cm in body length – impossible to miss, really.

And exactly the opposite can happen. It sits high in a leafy tree, and you often hear it before you see it. I find this contrast particularly interesting.

As a DecoBird, it works excellently, of course, because Wildlife Garden can use vibrant colors here. At 21.8 cm in length and 160 g, it is also large enough to stand out on its own. For me, this bird therefore does not need a large group around it – its yellow color takes care of that all on its own.
