The unmistakable bird of the North Atlantic

Hardly any seabird is as recognizable as the puffin. Its black and white plumage is almost reminiscent of a small tuxedo, while the large colorful beak gives the bird its unmistakable face.

Wildlife Garden has turned this into one of the most striking and at the same time largest DecoBirds in the series.

The Atlantic puffin – Fratercula arctica

The Atlantic puffin is a seabird of the North Atlantic. It spends a large part of its life on the open ocean and comes to land primarily for breeding.

This distinguishes it significantly from our garden and woodland birds. Its true habitat is the sea.

The beak changes with the seasons

The striking beak is one of the puffin's most well-known features. It displays its characteristic vibrant coloration especially during the breeding season.

Outside of the breeding season, the beak appears much more subdued. Wildlife Garden presents the puffin in its particularly well-known appearance with the colorful beak.

Showing its skills underwater

On land, the stocky puffin looks almost a bit relaxed. In the water, however, the picture is completely different.

Puffins are excellent swimmers and divers. When foraging, they move underwater and hunt primarily for small fish such as herring and sand eels.

Wildlife Garden states that puffins can dive to depths of about 60 meters when hunting.

A large DecoBird weighing 350 grams

At 17.7 × 8.1 × 19.4 cm, the puffin is already one of the larger figures in the DecoBird series. Its weight of around 350 g is particularly significant.

I feel this number is an essential part of the product description. In a photo, it is difficult to see how much substance a wooden figure actually has. 350 g is something completely different from the 40 or 50 g of a small titmouse.

The puffin therefore works very well as a standalone figure on a sideboard, bookshelf, or desk and does not necessarily need other DecoBirds around it.

Hand-carved and hand-painted

The puffin is carved by hand from wood and then painted with water-based colors.

In this bird species, a compact body shape and large, calm areas of color meet the much more detailed design of the face and beak. It is precisely this contrast that makes the figure interesting.

Since each bird is crafted by hand, small differences in wood structure, carving, and painting may occur. They are part of the artisanal character of the DecoBird series.

For indoor use

According to the current usage recommendation for the DecoBird series, the hand-carved bird figure is intended for indoor use.

At nearly 20 cm in height and 350 g in weight, I would give the puffin some space. Its powerful body shape can look particularly effective on a sideboard, a larger shelf, or a chest of drawers.

With information about the real puffin

This is a particularly good fit for the puffin, because behind its almost cartoonish appearance lies a highly specialized seabird that spends the majority of its life on the North Atlantic.

My assessment

For me, the puffin is one of the DecoBirds that you simply cannot overlook. This is of course due to its colorful beak, but equally to the size and weight of the figure.

350 g is a statement for a DecoBird. You are not getting a small, light bird figure here, but a truly substantial piece.

What I especially like, however, is the contrast between its appearance and its way of life. On land, the puffin looks almost a bit droll. In reality, it is a high-seas bird and an excellent diver. It is precisely these kinds of stories that make the Wildlife Garden birds more interesting to me than a mere decorative figure.
