A bird that belongs in the air
For a common swift, a sitting representation would almost be a pity. Its life is so closely linked to flying that Wildlife Garden depicts it with wide, sickle-shaped wings spread out.
The figure measures 27.5 cm from wingtip to wingtip, giving it a surprising visual presence despite its low weight.
The common swift – Apus apus
When common swifts hunt over rooftops in late spring, they are often recognizable by their silhouette alone. The long, narrow, sickle-shaped wings are one of their most striking features.
Their rapid flight maneuvers and characteristic calls also make them unmistakable summer guests over our cities and villages.
A life in the air
Common swifts are exceptionally well-adapted to life in the air. They hunt flying insects in flight and spend a surprisingly large part of their lives airborne.
Accordingly, their very short legs appear almost inconspicuous in proportion to their long wings. Their body structure is specialized for efficient and enduring flight.
That is precisely why Wildlife Garden's flying representation works so well for this species of bird.
Not a swallow
At first glance, common swifts are often confused with swallows. Because of their long wings and rapid flight, this confusion is easy to understand.
Zoologically, however, swifts do not belong to the swallow family. The similarity in their body shapes arose primarily because both bird groups are excellently adapted to hunting insects in flight.
A summer guest with a long journey
The common swift is a migratory bird. It spends only part of the year in Europe and then migrates back to its African wintering grounds.
As a result, its presence here is closely linked to summer. When common swifts can once again be heard and seen over the houses, the warm season has truly arrived.
27.5 cm wingspan at only 62 grams
The proportions of this DecoBird are unusual: the figure is only 3.6 cm high, but reaches a width of 27.5 cm with its wings spread.
At the same time, it weighs only about 62 g. This combination makes the common swift a very lightweight, yet visually large figure within the DecoBird series.
Hand-carved from linden wood
Wildlife Garden carves the common swift by hand from linden wood. The figure is then painted with water-based paints.
With this model in particular, the focus is less on elaborate coloring and more on the bird's typical shape. The long wings and slim silhouette must be right so that the common swift is immediately recognizable.
Due to the manual craftsmanship, small differences in carving, wood grain, and painting can occur. These are part of the character of the DecoBird series.
For hanging
There is a small eyelet on the back of the common swift DecoBird. This allows the figure to be hung freely in a room or in front of a suitable background.
The wide-spread wing shape looks particularly beautiful in front of a window or in a group with other flying DecoBirds.
For indoor use
According to the current usage recommendations for the DecoBird series, this hand-carved and hand-painted wooden figure is intended for indoor use.
Although the common swift requires some space due to its 27.5 cm wingspan, it does not take up any surface area on a shelf or windowsill thanks to its hanging presentation.
With a brochure on the bird species
The DecoBird comes with a brochure containing information about the common swift. Due to its spread wings, the figure is delivered in a closed box.
My assessment
For me, the common swift is clearly one of the DecoBirds that must be depicted in flight. There is hardly any other native bird whose lifestyle and body shape are so consistently geared towards flying.
I find the ratio of size to weight particularly interesting: a 27.5 cm wingspan looks quite substantial, yet the figure weighs only 62 g.
And for those who have simply lumped swallows and swifts into the same category, this DecoBird provides a wonderful opportunity to take a closer look the next time you gaze up at the summer sky.
