A bird whose name almost everyone knows
You don't even have to have seen a cuckoo to know its name. Its characteristic two-syllable call is one of the most recognizable bird sounds in Europe – and is what gave the bird its name in many languages.
The Swedish name "Gök" and the English "Common cuckoo" both refer to the same extraordinary bird: the cuckoo, scientifically Cuculus canorus.
The call of spring
The cuckoo is a migratory bird. After winter, it returns from Africa to its European and Asian breeding grounds. Its far-reaching call is therefore considered a traditional sign of spring for many people.
Often, you hear the cuckoo long before you actually see it. Despite its famous call, encountering the bird itself can be surprisingly rare.
An unusual family life
Hardly any other trait is as closely linked to the cuckoo as its extraordinary reproductive strategy. The cuckoo does not build its own nest to raise its offspring, but instead lays its eggs in the nests of other bird species.
The host birds then take over the incubation and care of the young cuckoo.
The cuckoo chick grows quickly and gains a decisive advantage over the host birds' own offspring in the foreign nest. This behavior makes the cuckoo one of the most well-known examples of brood parasitism in the European bird world.
More than just its "cuckoo"
Its call and its breeding behavior are so famous that the bird's actual appearance sometimes almost fades into the background.
The cuckoo has a slender body, a relatively long tail, and pointed wings. Its predominantly gray coloring appears quite restrained compared to a great tit or blue tit.
That is precisely why the hand-carved DecoBird relies less on vibrant colors and more on body shape, proportions, and finely crafted plumage details.
An impressive DecoBird
With a length of 18 cm and a height of 17.6 cm, the cuckoo is not one of the smaller figures in the DecoBird series. Its weight of around 210 g is particularly interesting.
This information is important when buying online: at 210 g, the figure has significantly more substance than, for example, the small tits and finches in the series.
The cuckoo can therefore stand on its own on a sideboard, shelf, or desk without being visually overwhelmed.
Hand-carved from linden wood
The DecoBird is hand-carved from linden wood and subsequently hand-painted. Linden wood is a classic material for figurative carvings due to its fine and uniform structure.
For the cuckoo, the elongated body shape, wings, long tail, and restrained plumage pattern are crucial for a credible depiction.
Small differences in wood structure, carving, and painting are part of the craftsmanship and make every bird slightly individual.
For indoor use
According to the current usage recommendation from Wildlife Garden, the DecoBirds are intended for indoor use.
At 18 × 7 × 17.6 cm, the cuckoo is already large enough to work as a standalone bird figure. At the same time, it can be beautifully combined with smaller DecoBirds, which highlights the different sizes and body shapes of the bird species quite clearly.
With information about the real bird
The DecoBird comes with a brochure containing information about the cuckoo and its geographical distribution.
To me, this is an important component of the DecoBird concept: the wooden figure is not just a decoration, but also sparks interest in the real bird that served as the model.
My assessment
To me, the cuckoo is a particularly interesting DecoBird because almost everyone immediately has a connection to the bird – even though a surprisingly large number of people have probably never consciously seen a real cuckoo.
You know its call. You know its name. Almost everyone knows the story of the "cuckoo egg." It is only when you look at the figure more closely that you suddenly become interested in what this famous bird actually looks like.
With a weight of 210 g and nearly 18 cm in height, Wildlife Garden has also made it a quite substantial figure. That fits well for me: after all, the cuckoo is not just a small tit within our native bird world, but a bird with a very distinct appearance and a truly extraordinary way of life.
