One of our best-known tits

The great tit is one of the birds that many people recognize immediately. It can be regularly observed in gardens, parks, and at bird feeders, and despite its small size, it stands out due to its high-contrast coloring.

Wildlife Garden implements exactly these typical features in its hand-carved DecoBird: black head, large white cheek patches, yellow underside, and the dark stripe that runs across the chest and belly.

The great tit – Parus major

The great tit is the largest of our native tit species. It is extremely adaptable and occurs in forests as well as in parks and gardens.

Especially in winter, it is one of the frequent visitors to bird feeders. In spring and summer, however, insects and their larvae play an important role in its diet.

Black, white, and yellow – easy to recognize

The black head with the large white cheeks is one of the best identifying features of the great tit. Added to this is the bright yellow underside with a black longitudinal stripe.

This clear division of color fields is particularly interesting in a hand-painted bird figure. At first glance, this creates the typical appearance of a great tit.

A self-confident visitor at the bird feeder

Despite their manageable body size, great tits appear surprisingly self-confident. They can be regularly observed at bird feeders and accept various seeds as well as fatty winter feed.

They also readily accept nesting boxes. This makes the great tit one of the bird species that can be observed relatively well in one's own garden.

My assessment

For me, the great tit is one of the DecoBirds for which Wildlife Garden does not need an exotic bird at all to create an interesting figure. Almost everyone knows it – and that is exactly its strength.

You see the wooden figure and immediately recognize the bird from your own garden. At the same time, when looking closely, details stand out that one might have hardly noticed outdoors before: the large white cheeks, the black chest stripe, or the precise boundary of the individual plumage colors.

Together with the blue tit and crested tit, I would also find the great tit particularly beautiful. Then, three decorative wooden birds almost incidentally become a small comparison of different tit species.
