The bird that runs headfirst down a tree
With the nuthatch, it is less about a spectacular color and more about its movement that makes it unmistakable. It can not only climb up tree trunks, but also move downwards headfirst.
Anyone who has consciously looked for it will often recognize it by its behavior before they can even clearly see its plumage markings.
The nuthatch – Sitta europaea
The nuthatch is a compactly built bird with strong legs and feet. Typical features are its blue-grey upper side, the warmer-colored underside, and the dark stripe that runs from the beak through the eye region.
Its habitat is primarily older deciduous and mixed forests, parks, and gardens with suitable trees, where it searches for food on trunks and branches.
Why is the nuthatch called a "Kleiber" in German?
The German name also tells us something about the bird. The nuthatch uses existing tree cavities, such as old woodpecker holes, as a nesting site.
If the entrance is too large, it can shrink it using a mixture of mud and other materials. This literal "gluing" or "Kleibern" of the entrance gave the bird its German name.
In this way, it protects its nesting cavity and adapts the opening to its own needs.
Skillful on the tree trunk
The nuthatch moves with extreme confidence on tree bark. Its strong feet and claws allow it to hold on to the trunk even in unusual positions.
The headfirst descent is particularly characteristic. This very ability makes it so interesting for birdwatching: it is an excellent feature for distinguishing it from other small tree-dwelling birds.
Hand-carved from linden wood
The DecoBird nuthatch is carved by hand from linden wood. This finely grained wood is a classic choice for carving and is particularly well-suited for small figurative works.
The bird is then hand-painted with water-based paints. For the nuthatch, the clear separation between the blue-grey back and the warmer underside, as well as the striking dark eye stripe, are particularly important for its typical appearance.
Small variations in wood structure, carving, and painting are part of the artisanal process and make each DecoBird slightly individual.
11.4 cm long and 52 grams in weight
The nuthatch measures 11.4 × 4.9 × 8.3 cm and weighs around 52 g. This makes it one of the more compact DecoBirds, requiring very little shelf space.
Its stocky body shape distinguishes it nicely from slimmer species like a wagtail or swallow. Such differences stand out particularly well in a small group of various DecoBirds.
For indoor use
According to the current usage recommendations for the DecoBird series, the hand-carved and hand-painted wooden figure is intended for indoor use.
With its compact dimensions, the nuthatch easily finds a place on a windowsill, shelf, dresser, or desk.
With a booklet on the bird species
The DecoBird comes with a small booklet containing information about the nuthatch. The figure is delivered in a gift box with a display window.
In this way, Wildlife Garden combines the handcrafted wooden figure with information about the real bird.
My assessment
For me, the nuthatch is one of the DecoBirds for which a single piece of information is enough to make you look at the real bird with different eyes afterwards: it can run headfirst down a tree trunk.
And then there is its name. The fact that the German name "Kleiber" is related to shrinking and sealing the entrance of its nesting hole turns what initially seems like a somewhat unusual bird name into a very logical term.
These are exactly the kinds of small connections I like about the DecoBird series. The figure is decorative – but at the same time, you learn something about a bird you might actually encounter outdoors.
