The Kookaburra – Australia's laughing bird
The laughing kookaburra is one of Australia's most famous birds. Internationally, it is primarily known by its English name, kookaburra.
It owes its fame not only to its appearance. Its loud and unusual call sounds remarkably like human laughter, which is where the name "Laughing Kookaburra" comes from.
With this DecoBird, Wildlife Garden has chosen a bird that is highly recognizable, not just for its appearance, but for its voice as well.
The Laughing Kookaburra – Dacelo novaeguineae
The laughing kookaburra belongs to the kingfisher family and is one of its largest and most robust members.
You can see this immediately: its large head and powerful, long beak define its entire appearance. This distinguishes it significantly from the small, delicate songbirds in the DecoBird series.
A kingfisher that doesn't just eat fish
Anyone who thinks only of small fish when they hear "kingfisher" will be surprised by the laughing kookaburra. Its diet includes a variety of small animals.
Its powerful beak is an essential tool for this. Its very body shape shows that we are not dealing with a delicate seed-eater here, but a robustly built hunter.
A bird with a strong family life
Its social behavior is also interesting. Laughing kookaburras form permanent pair bonds. Both parents participate in nesting and caring for the young birds.
Wildlife Garden also points out that the birds can support each other during the nesting period. Behind that famous laughing call lies a truly complex family life.
An imposing figure in the DecoBird series
At 22.3 cm in height, the laughing kookaburra is one of the significantly larger DecoBirds. Its weight of around 327 g also sets it apart considerably from many of the small songbirds in the series.
You really notice this with a wooden figure. 327 g conveys much more substance than the 35 to 70 g of many small DecoBirds. The laughing kookaburra is therefore not a small accessory on a shelf, but a figure with significant presence.
Hand-carved and hand-painted
The laughing kookaburra is hand-carved from wood and then painted with water-based paints.
For this bird species, the large head, the powerful beak, and the different plumage sections offer plenty of opportunities for craftsmanship.
Small differences in the wood grain, the carving, and the paintwork are part of the artisanal production and make every DecoBird slightly unique.
For indoor use
According to the current usage recommendations for the DecoBird series, this hand-carved bird figure is intended for indoor use.
Due to its size and weight, I would give the kookaburra a little more space than a small tit. The figure can show off its striking shape well on a dresser, a sideboard, a larger bookshelf, or a desk.
With a brochure on the bird species
Wildlife Garden includes a brochure with information about the bird species with the kookaburra. Unlike many smaller DecoBirds, this large model is delivered in a closed box.
My assessment
To me, the laughing kookaburra is one of the DecoBirds where size and weight definitely belong in the description. 22.3 cm in height and 327 g are important pieces of information online, because only then do you understand that this is a significantly larger and more substantial figure being offered.
And, of course, the kookaburra is instantly recognizable. Even those who might not initially know the name "laughing kookaburra" may have already heard that incredible call, which really does sound like loud laughter.
I also like that Wildlife Garden doesn't stop at European garden birds with the DecoBird series. Between a blue tit, a chaffinch, and a house sparrow, an Australian kookaburra feels almost like a little exotic – and it is precisely this variety that makes the series so interesting.
