A swallow with an unmistakable silhouette
Swallows can often be recognized simply by their body shape. Their slender body, long wings, and especially their deeply forked tail create a silhouette that clearly distinguishes them from many other native songbirds.
Wildlife Garden captures this typical form beautifully in its hand-carved DecoBird. Unlike the flying version WG4448, this bird sits upright, making it easy to place on a shelf, windowsill, or dresser.
Dark back, light underside, and reddish-brown markings
In addition to its body shape, the contrasting coloration is one of its characteristic features. The upper side is dark with a bluish shimmer, while the underside appears significantly lighter. The forehead and throat stand out with their reddish-brown coloring.
It is precisely this combination of slender form, forked tail, and distinctive head markings that makes the swallow easily recognizable, even as a small wooden figure.
Hirundo rustica – an excellent flyer
Hirundo rustica spends a large part of its life in the air. These birds hunt flying insects and can even drink while in flight.
Its short legs, by contrast, are less suited for long stays on the ground. The true strength of this bird clearly lies in the air—fast, agile, and capable of abrupt changes in direction.
Long associated with humans
This species of swallow often uses structures created by humans as nesting sites. Nests can be found, for example, in barns, stables, garages, or under suitable bridges and other sheltered constructions.
The nest is built in a cup shape from moist material and lined with soft material on the inside. This close connection to buildings explains why swallows have been a familiar sight on rural farms for generations.
A classic herald of spring
Swallows are migratory birds. When they reappear in their European breeding grounds after the winter, they are traditionally associated with the arrival of spring.
Perhaps this is precisely why swallows are far more than just another bird species. Their return has been consciously noted for generations—and they appear frequently in idioms and stories as a result.
Hand-carved from linden wood
Wildlife Garden's DecoBirds are carved by hand from linden wood. This fine-grained wood is a classic carving material and is very well suited for small figurative works.
For the swallow, the elongated body shape and the characteristic tail are of primary importance. The figure is then hand-painted with water-based colors.
Small differences in wood grain, carving, and painting are part of the artisanal production process and make every DecoBird slightly unique.
14.4 cm long and 50 grams in weight
The barn swallow measures 14.4 × 5 × 9.1 cm and weighs around 50 g. Despite its elongated body shape, it requires very little space with a width of just 5 cm.
This makes it easy to place even where there is little room for larger DecoBirds.
For indoor use
According to Wildlife Garden's current usage recommendation, the hand-carved DecoBirds are intended for indoor use. The barn swallow is suitable for a windowsill, shelf, dresser, or desk, for example.
Includes a brochure about the bird species
The hand-carved bird comes with a brochure containing information about the bird species it depicts. The DecoBird is delivered in a gift box with a viewing window.
In doing so, Wildlife Garden combines the decorative wooden figure with information about its natural model, even with the swallow.
My assessment
For me, the silhouette of the swallow is what's decisive. You don't need spectacular colors: the slender body and the deeply forked tail are practically enough on their own to recognize which bird you have in front of you.
I also find it interesting how different the two versions from Wildlife Garden appear. The standing variant shows the details of the body and plumage beautifully, while the flying version focuses on movement.
And of course, the swallow is one of those birds with which many people associate memories. Anyone who has ever watched swallows flying through an old barn or over a farm in the summer will likely understand immediately why this bird has been perceived as a herald of spring and summer for so long.
