The tit with the unmistakable crest
With the crested tit, one look at the head is actually enough. Its striking black and white patterned crest makes it almost unmistakable among our native tits.
Wildlife Garden captures exactly this feature in its DecoBird. The raised crest gives the small wooden figure a unique expression and clearly distinguishes it from the blue tit, great tit, or marsh tit.
The crested tit – Lophophanes cristatus
The crested tit is closely tied to coniferous forests and is found particularly where spruce and pine trees offer suitable habitats.
With its brown-grey plumage, it initially appears much more reserved than, for example, a blue tit. However, with its distinctive crest, it possesses a recognition feature that almost no other small native songbird offers.
Provisions for winter
The crested tit's strategy for the cold season is particularly interesting. It hides food and thus builds up small stores that it can fall back on later.
Wildlife Garden aptly compares this behavior to that of a squirrel. Especially in the northern parts of its range, this hoarding helps the little tit survive the winter.
Hand-carved from linden wood
The crested tit is hand-carved from linden wood. The fine-grained wood is one of the classic carving woods and is particularly well-suited for small figurative work.
With this bird species, the crest is naturally the decisive detail. It changes the entire shape of the head and must be clearly worked out during carving so that a small tit actually becomes a crested tit.
The figure is then painted by hand with water-based paints. Small differences in wood structure, carving, and painting are normal with this artisan production and make every DecoBird slightly individual.
Small, but very characteristic
The crested tit measures 9.8 × 4.9 × 10 cm and weighs around 40 g. This makes it one of the smaller DecoBirds and it requires very little shelf space.
The figure becomes especially interesting when paired with other tit species. With similar body sizes, the different plumage patterns and head shapes can be compared directly.
For indoor use
The hand-carved and hand-painted DecoBird is intended for indoor decoration. Whether on a windowsill, a bookshelf, a dresser, or a desk, the compact crested tit requires very little space.
With brochure about the bird species
Wildlife Garden supplies the crested tit in a gift box with a viewing window. A small brochure with information about the bird species is also included.
This maintains the connection typical for the DecoBird series: a decorative, handcrafted wooden figure that simultaneously focuses on a specific bird species.
My assessment
For me, the crested tit is a particularly beautiful example of the fact that a bird does not necessarily need bright colors to be unmistakable.
In this case, the shape takes on that task. The small crest is enough, and you know practically immediately which bird you are looking at. That is exactly why it is also interesting as a hand-carved figure.
And I like the story about the food stores. A little tit that prepares for winter much like a squirrel is memorable. On your next walk through a coniferous forest, you might take a closer look to see if a small crest appears somewhere between the branches.
