A goldfinch in flight

Even when perched, the goldfinch is one of our most colorful native songbirds. However, in this flying version from Wildlife Garden, its striking wing markings are shown to their best advantage.

The wide-open wings completely change the effect of the figure. Instead of a small, standing wooden bird, a lively snapshot is created, as if the goldfinch were flying through the room.

Red, black, white, and bright yellow

Hardly any other native songbird can be identified as quickly by its coloration. Typical of the goldfinch are the bold red facial mask, the black-and-white head, and the distinct yellow markings on its otherwise dark wings.

The yellow wing bar becomes particularly visible in the flight posture. Together with the red facial markings, it gives this DecoBird its unmistakable character.

The goldfinch – Carduelis carduelis

The goldfinch belongs to the finch family. Another common name is thistle finch – and this name already reveals something about its diet.

With its relatively long and pointed beak, it can extract seeds from the seed heads of various plants. Its preference for thistle seeds is particularly well known.

This makes the goldfinch not only visually striking. Its body shape and especially its beak are also closely linked to its preferred food.

Hand-carved from linden wood

Wildlife Garden hand-carves the flying goldfinch from linden wood. The finely structured wood is very well suited for small figurative carvings and allows for clear detailing of the body, head, tail, and wings, even in a compact figure.

The bird is then painted by hand with water-based paints. With the goldfinch, this painting is particularly important, as it is the interplay of the different color patches that makes the species unmistakable.

Due to the manual work, slight differences in carving texture and paintwork may occur. Each DecoBird is therefore slightly individual.

Hanging instead of standing

There is a transparent loop on the back of the bird. This allows the goldfinch to be hung freely in the room, keeping its flight posture fully visible.

It looks particularly beautiful in front of a window, between branches, or in a loose group with other flying DecoBirds. Due to the transparent suspension, the attachment is visually unobtrusive.

Only 35 grams

The flying goldfinch measures 10.5 × 12 × 7.5 cm and weighs only about 35 g. The figure is therefore extremely light and can be easily integrated into any hanging decoration.

Despite its low weight, the spread wing shape provides enough surface area for the goldfinch's characteristic markings to stand out well.

With brochure on the bird species

The flying goldfinch comes with a small brochure containing information about the bird species. The hand-carved bird is delivered in a gift box with a display window.

This ensures that the connection between the decorative wooden figure and its natural model is maintained even with the flying DecoBirds.

My assessment

I find the flying version of the goldfinch particularly interesting because it actually shows something that remains hidden in a standing figure: the striking yellow markings of the open wings.

Wildlife Garden does not just use the flight posture here to make the bird look more dynamic; it also helps to make an important identifying feature of the species visible.

At only 35 g, the bird is also surprisingly light. Hung in front of a window or among a few branches, the figure can almost convey the impression of being suspended in the air for a moment.

For me, this is one of the flying figures where this version offers genuine added value compared to a standing DecoBird.
