A swallow belongs in the air

For a swallow, a flying version is actually the most logical form for a DecoBird. The sleek body, long wings, and forked tail only really come into their own in flight.

Wildlife Garden therefore does not depict the bird in a standing position. The wooden figure hangs from a hemp string attached to the back, showing the swallow with its wings spread wide.

22.9 cm length and 16 cm wingspan

With a length of 22.9 cm and a width of 16 cm, the flying swallow appears significantly larger than many of the small, standing DecoBirds. At the same time, its height is only 3.2 cm.

This flat, wide-spread form gives the figure a completely different effect. It requires no surface area and can be hung freely in front of a window, under a shelf, or between decorative branches.

Hand-carved and hand-painted

The swallow is carved from wood by hand and subsequently painted with water-based colors. Especially with a flying bird, not only the body and head, but also the widely spread wings and the typical tail must be carefully crafted.

Small differences in carving texture and painting are part of the artisanal manufacturing process. Each DecoBird may therefore differ slightly from another specimen.

A life defined by flight

Swallows are among those birds whose anatomy is particularly well-adapted to life in the air. The sleek body and long wings allow for fast and agile flight maneuvers.

Many of their prey are caught directly in mid-flight. This is why you often see swallows hunting through the air with rapid changes in direction.

It is precisely this dynamism that makes the hanging version much more convincing to me than a classic standing swallow figure.

A familiar companion to humans

Swallows have long lived in the immediate vicinity of humans, using buildings and other sheltered structures as nesting sites.

As a result, they are among the birds with which many people associate personal memories – for example, swallows in old barns, under eaves, or summer evenings when they fly through the air hunting for insects.

Only 50 grams

Despite its large, spread-out form, the wooden figure weighs only about 50 g. This makes perfect sense for a hanging DecoBird: the figure is visually present but does not require heavy-duty hanging hardware.

The combination of 22.9 cm length, 16 cm wingspan, and only 50 g weight also conveys quite well online what kind of decorative object you are getting – large in silhouette, but lightweight in construction.

With brochure on the bird species

As with the other DecoBirds, Wildlife Garden includes a small brochure with information about the depicted bird with the flying swallow as well.

This maintains the connection between the hand-carved wooden figure and nature observation.

My assessment

In the case of the swallow, I find the flying version particularly successful. One can easily imagine a tit or a robin sitting – with a swallow, however, I immediately think of movement.

The large silhouette with a weight of only 50 g is also interesting. At 22.9 cm in length, the bird has a clear presence in a room without being massive. I would therefore find it especially beautiful in front of a window or hanging freely between a few branches.

And here again, a strength of the DecoBird series is evident: Wildlife Garden does not use the same base form for every bird. Where the characteristic movement of a species is important, the design is allowed to change accordingly.
