Small, colorful, and instantly recognizable

The blue tit is one of our most well-known garden birds. Despite its small size, it is unmistakable with its blue cap, yellow underside, and the blue-and-white patterns in its plumage.

Wildlife Garden captures exactly these characteristic features in its DecoBird. At only 8.8 cm long, the blue tit is one of the smaller figures in the series – true to its natural counterpart.

Hand-carved from linden wood

Wildlife Garden's DecoBirds are hand-carved from linden wood. Linden wood is a classic carving wood with a fine and uniform texture. It can be worked with great control, making it particularly suitable for small figurative works and fine details.

This is especially important for such a small bird. The body shape, beak, wings, and plumage structure must be worked out within just a few centimeters without the figure looking coarse.

Afterward, the blue tit is hand-painted with water-based paints. Small differences between individual figures are part of the artisanal process and make every DecoBird slightly unique.

The blue tit – Cyanistes caeruleus

The blue tit is at home in many gardens, parks, and deciduous forests in Europe. It is particularly common to observe where there are old trees, nesting opportunities, and an adequate food supply.

It is also a regular visitor at feeding stations. And although it is one of our smaller garden birds, it acts quite confidently and is not easily driven away by larger birds.

A welcome guest at the nesting box

Blue tits use natural tree cavities, but also readily accept suitable nesting boxes. This is why this bird species is a familiar resident of many people's gardens.

This makes the blue tit as a DecoBird particularly endearing: one does not only know the little bird from an identification guide, but perhaps has even observed it at the bird feeder or nesting box themselves.

My assessment

To me, the blue tit is almost a textbook example of the DecoBird concept. It is small, everyone knows it, and yet it possesses an amazingly characteristic pattern.

At only 8.8 cm long, the shape and paintwork must be accurate for a small carved bird to truly become a blue tit. This is exactly why linden wood is such a good choice as a classic carving wood.

And that is likely part of the appeal of this series: whoever observes a blue tit in the garden and then looks at the hand-carved figure can immediately compare. Wildlife Garden does not simply depict arbitrary "cute birds," but rather attempts to represent a specific species with its typical features.
