The bluethroat – small, but unmistakable

With the bluethroat, a glance at the breast is actually enough to understand how this little bird got its name. The male bluethroat sports a strikingly bright blue throat, which is additionally accentuated by a rust-red spot in the form depicted by Wildlife Garden.

Exactly this distinguishing feature is also the focus of the hand-carved DecoBird. Despite its compact size of only 12.1 cm in length, it is immediately recognizable which bird species Wildlife Garden used as a model.

Hand-carved and hand-painted

The bluethroat is carved by hand from wood and subsequently painted with water-based paints. The different color areas of the plumage are carefully brought out in the process.

Since every DecoBird is worked on by hand, small differences in the carving structure and painting can occur. To me, these slight variations are part of what makes a handcrafted wooden figure.

Luscinia svecica – the "northern nightingale"

The bluethroat bears the scientific name Luscinia svecica and belongs to the migratory birds. Wildlife Garden describes it as a rather shy little bird with a remarkable voice.

Its clear and varied song has even earned it the nickname "northern nightingale." This makes the bluethroat interesting not only for its extraordinary coloration – this little bird is also something special acoustically.

The male bears the striking blue throat

Wildlife Garden consciously depicts the male bluethroat in this DecoBird. Its intensely blue throat marking makes the species particularly characteristic and gives the small wooden figure its most striking color accent.

This is a beautiful example of how the DecoBirds work: the crucial point is not to decorate with as many details as possible, but to bring out exactly the features that allow a bird species to be identified.

Compact and easy to place

This means the figure requires little space and can be easily arranged on a windowsill, between books on a shelf, on a desk, or together with other DecoBirds.

Especially with several birds, I find the different natural sizes interesting. After all, a bluethroat shouldn't suddenly appear just as big as an oystercatcher.

My assessment

For me, the bluethroat is one of those DecoBirds that you probably look at twice. Practically everyone recognizes a blackbird immediately – whereas far fewer people have consciously observed a bluethroat.

That is exactly what makes the figure interesting. The bright blue throat draws the eye at first, and then you want to know which bird is actually behind it.

This is what I particularly like about the DecoBird series: alongside our very familiar garden birds, you encounter species you might not yet know. And suddenly, a small hand-carved wooden figure becomes an occasion to take a closer look at a real bird.
