Two Anna's hummingbirds in flight

With the Anna's hummingbird, Wildlife Garden implements the idea of DecoBirds in a completely different way. The two small wooden birds do not stand on feet, but are depicted in flight and are hung up.

The set of 2 contains two hummingbirds of different sizes and in different positions. This allows the birds to be arranged together without looking like two identical decorative objects.

Hand-carved and hand-painted

Both hummingbirds are carved from wood by hand and then painted with water-based paints. Especially with these small birds, the craftsmanship is interesting: the body, wings, and the long, narrow beak typical of hummingbirds must be recognizably worked out over just a few centimeters.

Due to the hand-crafted nature, small differences in the carving structure and painting can occur. This gives every bird its own character.

The Anna's hummingbird – Calypte anna

The Anna's hummingbird is a North American hummingbird species. With a body length of about 10 cm, it is one of the smaller birds – the size of the hand-carved figures is therefore quite close to the natural model.

The adult male is particularly striking with its intensely pink to reddish shimmering feathers on its head and throat. Depending on how the light hits them, this coloration can look very different.

Like other hummingbirds, the Anna's hummingbird feeds on flower nectar and small insects, among other things.

Hummingbirds belong in the air

The decision to hang these DecoBirds fits the motif particularly well. Hummingbirds are extraordinarily agile fliers and, due to their special wing movement, can even stand almost motionless in the air.

Wildlife Garden therefore depicts both birds with spread wings. When hung up, they create an entirely different effect than the classic standing DecoBirds.

For windows, branches, and flower arrangements

There is a suspension hook on the back of each bird. This allows the small hummingbirds to be decorated freely in front of a window or between branches, for example.

The two birds can also set a beautiful accent in a larger flower arrangement. Wildlife Garden also mentions Christmas and Easter decorations as potential uses.

Precisely because there are two birds, they can be arranged with some distance between them. This looks livelier than hanging them directly next to each other.

Two different sizes

The larger Anna's hummingbird measures 9 × 4 × 3 cm, the smaller one 8 × 3 × 3 cm. The figures are therefore extremely compact.

This fits the natural model very well: after all, a hummingbird should not look like a large decorative bird. At the same time, the beak, wing posture, and coloration are worked out clearly enough to represent the bird species recognizably.

With a small booklet about the bird species

The set includes a booklet with information about the Anna's hummingbird. That is a detail that I like about the DecoBird series: Wildlife Garden does not just limit itself to producing a decorative bird, but also establishes a connection to the actual bird species.

My assessment

The Anna's hummingbird shows very beautifully how versatile the DecoBird series has become in the meantime. A hummingbird on two metal feet wouldn't really work for me – its special fascination is, after all, created by its flight.

That is why I find the solution with two differently depicted birds for hanging up to be convincing. In front of a window or between a few branches, the small figures can actually convey the impression that they are currently on the move in the air.

And here, too, the orientation towards a concrete species is decisive. They are not simply two colorful fantasy hummingbirds, but rather Wildlife Garden takes a real, existing North American bird, Calypte anna, as the model. That is exactly what distinguishes the DecoBirds from ordinary bird decorations for me.
