The blackbird as a hand-carved DecoBird

The blackbird is one of the birds we encounter almost every day – in the garden, in the park, and nowadays even in the heart of our cities. This is precisely why it is a beautiful example of the philosophy behind Wildlife Garden’s DecoBirds: the focus is not on exotic fantasy birds, but on species we actually know from our surroundings.

The wooden figure represents a male blackbird. Its black plumage is punctuated by the striking yellow-orange beak and matching eye ring. With this, Wildlife Garden captures the exact features that make an adult male blackbird particularly easy to recognize.

Hand-carved and hand-painted

Each DecoBird is carved from wood and then painted by hand. The aim is not a perfectly smooth, industrial-looking surface. The carved texture remains visible, helping to depict the plumage and body shape in a tactile way.

My assessment

With the blackbird, we are starting with exactly the right bird for the DecoBirds. It is not a spectacular or exotic bird – and that is precisely why it fits perfectly with the original idea behind Wildlife Garden.

Helena Nobel and Wildlife Garden have studied real bird species very closely for this series. With the blackbird, the combination of a black body and a yellow-orange beak and eye ring is enough for practically any bird expert to immediately know what they are looking at.

For me, that is the true strength of the DecoBirds: they are decorative, but they are not just decorative birds. Each figure represents an actually existing bird species and may well lead you to look a little more closely the next time you glance into the garden.
