A small guardian from the Alps

Sitting upright and looking attentively at its surroundings – this is how many people know the marmot from the Alps. Wildlife Garden captures this very characteristic posture for its hand-carved DecoAnimal.

The 16.5 cm high wooden figure shows the alpine marmot with a sturdy, round body, short tail, and dense-looking fur texture. The visible carving marks are deliberately part of the design and give the figure its handcrafted character.

Hand-carved from linden wood

Wildlife Garden crafts the marmot from linden wood. This wood is very easy to work with and is therefore particularly suitable for the sculptural forms and fine carving details of the animal figures.

After carving, the marmot is painted by hand with water-based acrylic paint. Different shades of brown and gray give the carved fur additional depth.

Since the figures are processed by hand, small differences in carving structure and painting may occur. It is precisely these variations that belong to the character of a handcrafted wooden animal.

Glass eyes for a lifelike expression

A small but effective detail is the eyes made of glass. They give the face additional depth and reinforce the attentive expression of the upright sitting marmot.

Wildlife Garden thus combines three different elements: the sculptural form of the carved linden wood, the multi-layered paint, and the smooth surface of the glass eyes.

The Alpine marmot – Marmota marmota

The alpine marmot is one of the characteristic inhabitants of the European mountains. It lives primarily in alpine meadows and creates widely branched underground tunnel systems.

Marmots live in family groups and spend a significant part of the year in hibernation. During the summer months, they must therefore build up sufficient fat reserves for the cold season.

They are particularly known for their audible warning whistles. If a marmot detects a potential danger, it uses these to warn other animals in its group.

16.5 cm high and yet compact

Due to its upright posture, the DecoAnimal reaches a height of 16.5 cm. The footprint, however, remains pleasantly compact at about 8 × 7.7 cm.

This makes the marmot easy to place on a bookshelf, desk, sideboard, or windowsill. With a weight of about 222 g, the figure still has enough substance so as not to seem like a light, flimsy decoration.

For nature and alpine lovers

The marmot is, of course, particularly interesting for people who have a connection to the Alps – be it through hiking, mountain holidays, or simply an enthusiasm for the local wildlife.

As a hand-carved animal figure, however, it works just as well independently as a small nature-related home accessory.

Care

The DecoAnimal is intended for indoor use. Wildlife Garden recommends using a soft, dry cloth for cleaning. Abrasive cleaning agents should not be used.

My assessment

I especially like the Alpine marmot within the DecoAnimals range because of its posture. At 16.5 cm, the figure is relatively tall but, due to its compact footprint, it requires surprisingly little space.

I also think it is very good that Wildlife Garden provides more precise material specifications for this newer model: linden wood, water-based acrylic paint, and glass eyes. This allows us to explain to the customer exactly what they are getting.

And the marmot is a beautiful example of why the DecoAnimals are more than just general animal decorations. The upright posture, the sturdy body, and the attentive gaze clearly refer to a specific species – the alpine marmot, Marmota marmota.
