The Moomin family gets creative

On this large Moomin mug, the Moomin family shows its artistic side. Moomintroll is painting letters and has apparently gotten a bit too much paint on himself. Moominmamma is painting pictures of herself and her garden directly onto the wall, while Moominpappa works on his own artwork with oil paints.

The motif is typical of Tove Jansson's world: it is not about doing something perfectly. The characters approach things with joy and in their own unique way. In the end, what counts most is experiencing something together.

A motif with multiple stories

The illustrations on this mug draw on scenes from several Moomin stories. They are based on Tove Jansson's comic strip "Moomin's Desert Island" from 1959, the novel "Moominpappa at Sea" from 1965, and the comic strip "Moomin Valley Turns Painter" from 1962, which was drawn by Tove Jansson's brother, Lars Jansson.

As a result, you don't just encounter individual characters on the mug, but various facets of the Moomin world. The depiction of the three family members is particularly beautiful: each paints in their own way, yet it creates a collective image of the family.

0.4 liters – the large Moomin mug

At 0.4 liters, this mug is somewhat larger than the classic 0.3-liter Moomin mugs. It is particularly well-suited for a large coffee, café au lait, tea, hot chocolate, or any other favorite drink.

I find the larger size especially practical for coffee and cocoa. Anyone who likes to have a bit more in their mug in the morning will likely be happier with the 0.4-liter version than the smaller one.

The classic Arabia shape

The shape is based on Kaj Franck's timeless Teema series. Its clear, functional design provides a calm frame for the detailed Moomin illustrations.

To me, this is one of the strengths of Moomin by Arabia: the mugs are not only printed with a beautiful motif, but they also combine the Moomin world with a shape that has stood for functional Scandinavian design for decades.

Vitreous porcelain – for everyday use

The mug is made of vitreous porcelain and is designed for daily use. It is dishwasher-safe and suitable for use in the microwave, oven, and freezer.

This means the mug doesn't have to stay in the cupboard. It is large enough for your daily coffee and at the same time a beautiful piece of Moomin history for your table.

My assessment

I particularly like this mug because of the family scene. Many Moomin mugs focus on a single character, but here you get the whole family and, with it, much more of the typical Moomin world.

I also find the 0.4-liter size to be exceptionally successful. It is much more practical for a large coffee or hot chocolate than the 0.3-liter version. And the blue color scheme with cream-white and black looks very classic and timeless.

For me, this is a mug that Moomin fans will enjoy using not only because of the motif but also because of its size and suitability for everyday life.
