Snorkmaiden on the Riviera

Snorkmaiden is one of the most well-known characters from the Moomin world. She is sensitive, a little vain, and loves to flirt. At the same time, she knows exactly what she likes – and what she doesn't.

The motif of this purple bowl comes from Tove Jansson's comic “Moomin on the Riviera” from 1955. In it, Snorkmaiden discovers her sense of fashion and tries out her first lipstick and a bikini. However, after trying both, she realizes that these things don't really suit her after all.

It is precisely this little story that fits Snorkmaiden's character wonderfully: she tries something new, but decides for herself what truly suits her.

15 cm – the practical size for everyday life

With a diameter of 15 cm and a volume of 0.3 l, the bowl is exceptionally versatile. It is suitable for cereal, yogurt, and curd dishes just as much as for desserts, fruit, small side dishes, cookies, or snacks.

As with other Moomin by Arabia tableware pieces, the original motif was adapted by Tove Slotte for the shape of the dish. This preserves the characteristic drawing while making it work on practical, everyday tableware.

My assessment

I like the purple Snorkmaiden bowl primarily because the motif doesn't just show a pretty character. It tells a little story and shows Snorkmaiden as she really is: curious, fashion-conscious, a bit vain – but quite capable of deciding for herself what suits her.

For me, the 15 cm format is also a very good size for Moomin bowls. Cereal, yogurt, dessert, or fruit fit inside, while the bowl remains compact enough for everyday use. The soft purple also makes it a very beautiful individual piece on the breakfast table.
