Moominpappa – between adventure and responsibility

Moominpappa is the father of the Moomin family and a character with two very different sides. On one hand, he loves adventure and enjoys talking about his experiences and travels. On the other, he is a family man who takes his responsibilities seriously and cares for his family.

It is precisely this side that is shown by the motif on this mug. Moominpappa is preparing the Moominhouse for the coming winter. The windows are being protected against the cold and firewood is being prepared so that the family stays warm and safe during their hibernation.

The illustration is based on Tove Jansson’s comic strip “Moomin Winter” from 1959 and was adapted as a tableware motif for Moomin by Arabia by Tove Slotte.

A Moominpappa with his very own character

Moominpappa is no ordinary family man. His top hat is just as much a part of him as his enthusiasm for adventure and his sometimes rather idiosyncratic nature. It is precisely this mixture that makes him one of the most distinctive characters in the Moomin world.

On this mug, however, a different side becomes visible: the Moominpappa who takes care of practical matters. This fits very well with Tove Jansson's stories, in which the characters never possess only a single trait.

The classic Arabia shape

The Moominpappa mug has the classic shape of Moomin by Arabia mugs. It dates back to Kaj Franck's timeless Teema series and, with its clean, functional design, provides a calm frame for the illustration.

For me, this combination is one of the great strengths of Moomin by Arabia: Tove Jansson's characters and stories meet a simple Scandinavian tableware shape that remains timeless, regardless of the motif.

Vitro porcelain – robust for everyday use

The mug is made of vitro porcelain. The material is designed for daily use and fits perfectly with the functional Arabia shape.

The mug is dishwasher safe and suitable for the oven, microwave, and freezer. This makes it not only a beautiful piece for Moomin fans, but a mug that can be used every day as a matter of course.

With a capacity of 0.3 liters, it has a pleasant size for coffee, tea, or cocoa.

My assessment

I find the Moominpappa motif particularly successful because it brings his two sides together: the adventurer and the family man. The top hat and the typical figure are immediately recognizable, while at the same time the motif tells a very specific little story from the Moomin universe.

I also like the rather restrained color scheme in blue, gray, and cream. It makes the mug a bit calmer than many of the colorful Moomin motifs and thus makes it very easy to combine with other tableware.

For me, this is a lovely mug for Moominpappa fans – and for anyone who loves that mix of adventure, family, and sometimes slightly idiosyncratic humor in the Moomin stories.
