The Ancestor – a mysterious inhabitant of the Moominhouse
The Ancestor is one of the more mysterious figures from the world of the Moomins. Their story can be found in Tove Jansson's "Moominland Midwinter." There, they appear during the winter in the abandoned Moominhouse and make themselves known in their own quiet way.
The Ancestor does not speak and moves mostly at night. It is precisely this mysterious and somewhat eccentric nature that makes the character so special. The motif is beautifully showcased on the black mug and conveys this somewhat mysterious atmosphere.
Those familiar with the Moomin stories will immediately recognize: this is not one of the usual cheerful Moomin motifs, but a character with a very unique history.
The classic Arabia shape
The Ancestor mug features the classic, clean shape that Arabia has used for its Moomin mugs for decades. The simple design provides a beautiful contrast to the detailed motif.
For me, this is one of the great strengths of Moomin by Arabia: the mugs are not just printed fan merchandise. Tove Jansson's illustrations meet a timeless Scandinavian tableware shape that can be used quite naturally in everyday life.
Vitro porcelain – robust for everyday use
The mug is made of vitro porcelain. The material is perfectly suited for daily use and combines robust everyday practicality with the clean design of the Arabia tableware series.
The mug is dishwasher safe as well as suitable for the oven, microwave, and freezer. This makes it not only a piece for Moomin fans and collectors, but a mug that can be used quite naturally every day.
With a capacity of 0.3 liters, it is a pleasant size for coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
My assessment
The Ancestor mug is for Moomin fans who also know and appreciate the less obvious characters and stories. The black decor in particular makes it significantly quieter and more mysterious than many of the colorful Moomin mugs.
I find this motif particularly interesting because it shows another side of the Moomin stories. Tove Jansson did not just tell the world of the Moomins as friendly and cute – there are also enigmatic, slightly eerie, and sometimes quirky characters there. For me, the Ancestor belongs exactly in this category.
And as with the other Moomin by Arabia mugs, the following applies here too: despite the special motif, it is not purely a collector's item. The classic shape and robust vitro porcelain make it a perfectly normal everyday mug – just with a rather unusual story.
