A Moomin mug for lovers

For me, the “Love” motif is one of the most beautiful Moomin designs. Moomin and Snorkmaiden are depicted here in a loving scene—fitting for a mug that is perfect as a gift for a loved one.

The motif is celebrating its 30th anniversary. I particularly like the soft color scheme with the subtle pink and the warm cream-colored base tone. The pink does not look kitschy, but rather pleasantly calm.

The Moomins were created by Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson. Moomin and his friends live in Moominvalley somewhere in Finland and have long been a staple of Finnish and Scandinavian everyday culture.

The classic Arabia shape

What I especially like about the Arabia Moomin mugs is the combination of the Moomin illustrations with a classic and functional tableware shape.

The shape goes back to Kilta, which Kaj Franck designed for Arabia in 1952 and which later became the foundation for Teema.

The clean shape is timeless and versatile. For me, this is an important point: if you take away the Moomin motif, you are still left with a classic, functional mug.

It is precisely this combination of Finnish product design and Tove Jansson’s imagery that makes the Moomin mugs so interesting to me.

Vitro-porcelain – robust for everyday life

Arabia uses vitro-porcelain for this mug. The material has several interesting properties that make it particularly suitable for tableware.

Vitro-porcelain is durable and withstands the rigors of daily use well. The material also has good resistance to chemical influences and temperature fluctuations.

With this mug, the practical features are particularly interesting: it is dishwasher safe, oven safe, microwave safe, and freezer safe.

The cream-colored base tone is part of the material’s effect. Vitro-porcelain does not have the bright white look associated with classic hard-paste porcelain. Together with the soft pink, this results in a very warm and calm color combination.

My assessment

I have been involved with Scandinavian design for many years and have therefore had Arabia products in my assortment and in my hands for a long time.

I would buy this mug myself.

I particularly like the interplay between the emotional Moomin motif, the classic Arabia shape, and the pleasantly subtle pink.

It is beautiful enough to enjoy looking at, but at the same time robust and practical enough that it doesn't just have to sit in the cupboard.

And that is exactly what is important to me in a good mug:

It shouldn't just look beautiful – you should enjoy using it every day.
