Velvet – particularly soft organic lambswool

Velvet means velvet – but of course, this wool blanket is not made of velvet. Klippan makes the small Velvet from 100% organic lambswool.

The name instead describes the character of the surface. The soft wool quality feels pleasant to the touch and gives Velvet its special character.

Especially for a blanket that is also intended for children, I find this pleasant texture particularly important.

100% organic lambswool

For the 90 x 130 cm Velvet, Klippan explicitly uses 100% organic lambswool.

Klippan states that this organic lambswool is free from pesticides and that no chemicals or antibiotics are used in the rearing of the lambs.

The natural wool fiber possesses temperature- and moisture-regulating properties. It keeps you pleasantly warm while simultaneously being able to absorb moisture and release it back into the environment.

90 x 130 cm – Lap blanket and larger children’s blanket

At 90 x 130 cm, Velvet sits exactly between a small baby blanket and a large sofa blanket.

For adults, the size is excellent as a lap blanket. Whether reading, watching TV, or working on the sofa or in an armchair, it warms the legs and body without the need for a large 130 x 200 cm wool blanket.

For children, however, 90 x 130 cm is already a nice, larger wool blanket. It can be used in the nursery, on the sofa, in the car, or on the go and can be used for significantly longer than a classic baby blanket.

The small Velvet is not simply the large one in miniature

I find this particularly interesting about this model: Klippan also offers Velvet as a large wool blanket in 130 x 200 cm. However, the two sizes differ in more than just their dimensions.

For the small Velvet in 90 x 130 cm, Klippan explicitly states 100% organic lambswool. For the large Velvet, however, it is listed as 100% lambswool.

Anyone who chooses the smaller Velvet is not just getting a more compact format, but also a wool quality explicitly designated as organic lambswool.

Dusty pink, eggshell blue, and saffron

Klippan offers the small Velvet in dusty pink, eggshell blue, and saffron.

The three colors give the simple wool blanket a completely different character in each case: dusty pink looks warm and soft, eggshell blue calm and Nordic, and saffron provides a significantly bolder color accent.

Klippan Yllefabrik is a Swedish family business whose history dates back to 1879. Its headquarters remain to this day in the town of the same name, Klippan, in southern Sweden.

From the original wool processing, a manufacturer has developed over generations that is today particularly known for its wool blankets and home textiles.

Own production in Latvia

Manufacturing takes place at their own subsidiary, Klippan Saule, in Latvia. There, Klippan has a modern machine fleet and controls the essential steps of wool processing itself.

Klippan purchases the natural fibers and handles spinning, dyeing, warping, weaving, and brushing, among other things, within its own production facility.

Especially with a blanket like Velvet, the surface treatment is important, because the pleasantly soft texture is an essential part of the product.

Care – 30 °C on the wool cycle

A wool blanket made of organic lambswool should not be washed more often than necessary. Regular airing and careful shaking are often enough for everyday use.

If washing becomes necessary, Klippan specifies machine washing for Velvet at 30 °C exclusively on the wool cycle. The blanket should be washed separately and not tumble dried. Bleach is not suitable.

My assessment

For me, the 90 x 130 cm Velvet is a particularly versatile size. For adults, it is a handy lap blanket; for children, it is already a really lovely wool blanket.

The material quality is also interesting. While Klippan makes the large Velvet from 100% lambswool, the small Velvet is explicitly made of 100% organic lambswool.

Add to that the pleasantly soft surface that gives the series its name. Anyone who doesn't need a large sofa blanket and is looking for a high-quality natural fiber blanket for an armchair, child’s room, or for on the go will find Velvet a very practical alternative.
