Tuva – a wool blanket with 60% Swedish wool

With Tuva, the real specialty lies in the material. Klippan crafts this wool blanket from 60% Swedish wool and 40% lamb's wool.

This makes Tuva one of the Klippan blankets in which a large portion of the raw material comes directly from Sweden. I find this particularly interesting because wool is available in Sweden – it just needs to be collected, sorted, and processed in a meaningful way.

Swedish wool instead of unused raw material

In recent years, Klippan has begun to work much more extensively with wool from Swedish sheep. The background to this is a truly surprising problem: for a long time, a large part of the wool produced in Sweden was hardly used because of a lack of demand and appropriate processing structures.

Klippan decided to make greater use of this available raw material. According to the company, purchases of Swedish wool have now been increased from an initial 4 tons to approximately 40 tons.

For me, this is a very sensible approach. An existing natural raw material is being utilized instead of being disposed of, while simultaneously avoiding the need to import all wool over long distances.

60% Swedish wool and 40% lamb's wool

Swedish wool has a different character than the fine lamb's wool we know from many classic Klippan blankets. It appears more robust and slightly more rustic.

Klippan does not try to completely refine away this exact character in Tuva. The blend of 60% Swedish wool and 40% lamb's wool combines the somewhat stronger structure of the local wool with the pleasant properties of lamb's wool.

The finished blanket is subsequently brushed. This makes the surface softer, while the natural structure of the wool remains recognizable and tangible.

Swedish wool is allowed to look like wool

This is what I particularly like about Tuva. Klippan does not try to make the same product out of every wool quality.

The Swedish wool is allowed to retain its own character. The result is not a completely smooth, uniform surface, but a wool blanket with a natural, slightly more rustic appeal.

Those looking exclusively for the finest and smoothest possible wool blanket will find other models at Klippan. Tuva is interesting precisely because you are allowed to see the origin of the material.

Traditional Nordic weaving pattern

The design also fits the material. Tuva is woven with geometric diamonds and arrow motifs, which are inspired by traditional Swedish weaving art.

In this blanket, Swedish raw materials and Swedish design traditions come together. The pattern looks Nordic without appearing like an applied decoration.

Rust, moss, and indigo on natural gray

Klippan offers Tuva in rust/natural gray, moss/natural gray, and indigo/natural gray.

To me, the color schemes fit the natural character of the blanket very well. Instead of artificial-looking, clean color blocks, natural gray remains an integral part of the design and is combined with rust, moss, or indigo.

130 x 200 cm including fringe

At 130 x 200 cm, Tuva offers enough space to completely snuggle up on the sofa or in an armchair.

Klippan explicitly states the dimensions of this model including the fringe. Tuva thus features the typical design of a throw.

Klippan Yllefabrik – back to Swedish wool

Klippan Yllefabrik was founded in 1879 in the town of the same name in southern Sweden and has been involved in the processing of wool for generations.

I find it particularly appropriate that the company is once again making greater use of wool from Swedish sheep today. This brings the raw material base back closer to the company's Swedish roots.

In-house production in Latvia

The production of the wool blanket takes place at the subsidiary Klippan Saule in Latvia. There, Klippan has a modern machine park and controls essential steps of wool processing within its own group of companies.

Klippan purchases the natural fibers and handles spinning, dyeing, warping, weaving, and brushing itself, among other processes.

This experience is especially important for Tuva. Different wool qualities must be processed together in such a way that the Swedish wool retains its characteristic expression while still creating a comfortable wool blanket.

Care – 30°C on the wool cycle

As with all good wool blankets, Tuva should not be washed more often than necessary. Regular airing and careful shaking are often sufficient for everyday use.

If a thorough cleaning becomes necessary, Klippan recommends machine washing Tuva at 30°C on a wool cycle or, alternatively, dry cleaning. A low temperature should be used when ironing.

My assessment

For me, Tuva is one of the more interesting new Klippan wool blankets. Not because it looks particularly spectacular, but because there is a meaningful development behind the material.

60% Swedish wool means that a raw material is being used that is produced directly in Sweden and was used far too little there for a long time. Klippan does not try to hide its somewhat more robust character, but makes it a component of the product.

The traditional weaving pattern, natural gray as a component of the color schemes, and the slightly rustic wool structure go very well together. As a result, Tuva does not feel like just any random new wool blanket, but like a product where the material, origin, and design truly belong together.
