Gotland – where the wool makes the difference

With the Gotland cushion cover, it is not a printed motif that takes center stage. The special character comes from the material itself: Klippan combines 75% lambswool with 25% wool from the Gotland sheep.

25% Gotland sheep wool

The Gotland sheep is an ancient Swedish breed closely linked to the island of Gotland. It is characterized by its naturally gray wool with various nuances and a special luster.

For this cushion cover, Klippan uses 25% Gotland wool and combines it with 75% lambswool. This gives the fabric its characteristic feel and vibrant wool texture.

I find this particular blend interesting: the Gotland wool gives the product its unique character, while the lambswool ensures a pleasantly soft wool quality.

For the New Zealand wool content, Klippan works with breeders licensed under Wool Integrity NZ™. According to the manufacturer, this wool comes from sheep that are not subjected to mulesing.

The Gotland cushion cover is also OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified and tested for harmful substances.

Klippan Yllefabrik was founded in 1879 in the southern Swedish town of Klippan and remains family-owned to this day. To me, their long experience with various wool qualities is one of the company's greatest strengths.

Gotland wool is a particularly interesting Swedish wool quality. Klippan does not just use it as a marketing term, but processes it with a clearly stated content of 25% in its Gotland products.

Own production in Latvia

Manufacturing takes place at their own subsidiary, Klippan Saule, in Latvia. There, Klippan controls the essential production steps themselves – from the raw material to spinning, dyeing, and warping, to the weaving and brushing of the wool.

This in-house textile production is an important difference compared to companies that exclusively purchase finished products from external manufacturers.

Care

Thanks to its natural fiber structure, wool has good properties that mean it does not need to be washed after every use. Often, airing and gentle shaking are sufficient.

This also preserves a larger portion of the natural wool fat, which is partially washed away during every intensive wash or dry cleaning.

My assessment

For me, the Gotland series is one of the most interesting wool qualities at Klippan. The reason is not any fancy pattern, but the material blend of 75% lambswool and 25% genuine Gotland wool.

Especially with a cushion, you can see and feel this special wool texture very well. The surface appears more robust and full of character than that of an ordinary, smooth cushion cover.

Those who appreciate natural materials and are not looking for just another decorative sofa cushion will receive a very typical Klippan product with Gotland: Swedish wool tradition, an interesting material blend, and a timeless 45 x 45 cm format.
