Fruits – a colorful baby wool blanket by Bengt & Lotta
Apples, pears, and oranges march in colorful rows across this small wool blanket. The "Fruits Baby" design is by Bengt Lindberg and Lotta Glave – the Swedish designer duo Bengt & Lotta, with whom Klippan has worked closely for many years.
The motif is clearly designed for children without looking like a typical baby product. Clear shapes, bold colors, and a simple graphic motif make the blanket unmistakably Scandinavian.
100% brushed lambswool
Klippan makes Fruits Baby from 100% lambswool. The wool surface is additionally brushed, giving it a pleasantly soft and warm feel.
Lambswool naturally possesses temperature- and moisture-regulating properties. The wool fiber can absorb moisture and release it back into the environment, thus ensuring a pleasantly balanced climate.
Especially for a baby blanket, I find this much more significant than a synthetic fiber blanket, which primarily attempts to retain as much heat as possible.
65 x 90 cm – the classic baby format
Measuring 65 x 90 cm, Fruits Baby features the classic format of Klippan baby wool blankets.
The size is very well suited for strollers and cradles and is simultaneously handy enough to take the blanket along on the go. It can also be easily used as a small mat or play blanket.
With this size, we are quite deliberately speaking of a baby blanket. In contrast, we position the larger Klippan blankets at 90 x 130 cm as knee blankets or larger children's blankets.
Apples, pears, and oranges
With Fruits Baby, things can get truly colorful. Bengt & Lotta arrange apples, pears, and oranges in repeating rows, turning a very simple motif into a lively graphic pattern.
This is what I generally like about the designs by Bengt & Lotta: the motifs are often immediately understandable and appear almost playfully simple. This is precisely why they work particularly well on textiles.
Bengt & Lotta and Klippan
Klippan has been working intensively for many years with the Swedish graphic designer duo Bengt Lindberg and Lotta Glave. Their designs can be found on numerous textiles and home accessories from the company.
Klippan also distributes products from the Bengt & Lotta own brand internationally. The collaboration therefore goes well beyond individual, occasional design commissions.
Fruits Baby is a beautiful example of this connection: a simple Scandinavian motif that can be transferred very well onto the woven wool surface.
A sturdy baby wool blanket
With a wool weight of approx. 667 g/m², Fruits Baby is sturdily crafted despite its small dimensions. The total weight is approx. 390 grams.
This gives you a proper woven wool blanket in a baby format, not a thin baby blanket with only a small wool content.
Klippan Yllefabrik – experience with wool since 1879
Klippan Yllefabrik is a Swedish family business whose history dates back to 1879. The headquarters are still located today in the town of the same name, Klippan, in Southern Sweden.
Originally, the company was involved in wool processing. Over generations, this developed into a manufacturer that today is particularly known for wool blankets and other home textiles.
Own production in Latvia
The wool textiles are manufactured at Klippan's subsidiary in Latvia. There, the company possesses a modern machine park and controls essential steps of the textile production itself.
Klippan further processes the natural fibers within its own production – from the yarn through dyeing and weaving to the final finishing of the wool surface.
Especially for a patterned blanket like Fruits Baby, this textile expertise is important, as the colorful design must be cleanly transferred into the woven surface.
Care – 30 °C on the wool cycle
Wool does not need to be washed unnecessarily often. The natural wool fat supports the dirt-repellent properties of the fiber. Often, regular airing and careful shaking are sufficient.
When a wash becomes necessary, Klippan specifies machine washing at 30 °C exclusively on the wool cycle for Fruits Baby. The blanket should be washed separately and not tumble dried. Bleaching agents are not suitable.
My assessment
I like Fruits Baby particularly because of the design. A baby blanket does not automatically have to consist of pale pink, light blue, or beige. Bengt & Lotta show here that bold colors can work very beautifully on a children's textile.
Added to this are 100% brushed lambswool and the practical 65 x 90 cm format. The result is a proper little wool blanket for strollers and nurseries, and at the same time, a beautiful piece of Scandinavian textile design.
Anyone looking for a natural baby wool blanket who likes things a bit more colorful will find Fruits Baby an exceptionally beautiful alternative to the quieter Klippan designs.
