Forest – the Scandinavian forest as a baby blanket

With Forest, various little woodland creatures romp across the blanket. The playful design was created by Bengt & Lotta and brings the clear and humorous design language typical of the Swedish designer duo into the nursery.

Unlike the Forest wool baby blanket of the same name, this version is made from cotton. Klippan uses 100% organic cotton for this and brushes the finished surface until it is pleasantly soft.

100% brushed organic cotton

Klippan manufactures Forest from 100% organic cotton. According to the manufacturer, the cotton is grown without the use of artificial fertilizers or pesticides.

The surface of the woven blanket is subsequently brushed. This gives the cotton a soft, slightly fluffy feel that differs significantly from a standard smooth-woven cotton blanket.

This is important: Forest is not a thin cotton blanket or a printed cloth, but a woven and subsequently soft-brushed baby blanket.

Cotton or wool?

Klippan offers Forest both as a wool and a cotton baby blanket. Both materials have their merits but possess different properties.

The cotton version is lighter and particularly uncomplicated for everyday use. Cotton is breathable and pleasant on the skin. It is therefore very well suited for warmer days and for parents who are intentionally looking for a baby blanket without wool.

The wool version, on the other hand, shows its strengths particularly in providing warmth and natural temperature and moisture regulation. There is therefore no fundamentally better option – the deciding factor is what the blanket will be used for.

70 x 90 cm – handy for strollers and nurseries

At 70 x 90 cm, Forest is slightly wider than the 65 x 90 cm Klippan wool baby blankets. Nevertheless, it remains a compact baby blanket that fits very well into a stroller.

The size is also practical at home: for covering, snuggling, as a small play mat, or simply as a beautiful blanket in the nursery.

Thanks to the cotton, it can also be easily used in the warmer seasons, when a heavy wool blanket often provides more warmth than is needed.

Two sides – one woven motif

The Forest motif is part of the weave and not simply printed onto a finished blanket. This creates a mirrored or color-inverted representation of the pattern on the back.

To me, this is a nice difference compared to many printed children's textiles: both the front and back are integral parts of the product's design.

Bengt & Lotta and Klippan

Bengt Lindberg and Lotta Glave have been working closely with Klippan Yllefabrik for many years. Their clear animal, plant, and nature motifs can be found on numerous textiles and home accessories from the Swedish manufacturer.

Furthermore, Klippan also distributes products from the Bengt & Lotta brand internationally. The collaboration thus goes far beyond individual design commissions.

To me, Forest is a typical Bengt & Lotta design: the individual figures are simple and immediately recognizable, yet together they create a lively graphic pattern.

Klippan Yllefabrik – textile manufacturer since 1879

Klippan Yllefabrik was founded in 1879 in the town of the same name in southern Sweden. The family business has been involved in the production and processing of textiles for generations.

In addition to its well-known wool blankets, the product range today also includes cotton textiles. Natural materials play an important role, especially in the children's and baby blankets.

In-house production in Latvia

Klippan produces its blankets at its own subsidiary in Latvia. The company has a modern machine park there and controls essential steps of the textile manufacturing process itself.

The cotton collection is also manufactured there. This is an important point for me: Klippan is not just a Scandinavian design brand that buys finished textiles somewhere, but rather possesses its own textile production facilities and the corresponding expertise.

Easy-care – machine wash at 40 °C

Here, the cotton version has a practical advantage over many wool blankets. Klippan specifies a machine wash at 40 °C for Forest.

The blanket should be washed separately. It may be ironed at a medium temperature; bleaching agents are not suitable.

Especially with a baby blanket, the simpler cleaning process is an argument that should not be underestimated.

My assessment

To me, Forest made of organic cotton is an interesting addition to Klippan's wool baby blankets. The brushed surface ensures that, despite being cotton, it has the soft, cozy character of a proper blanket.

At the same time, it is lighter than a classic wool blanket and machine washable at 40 °C. It is a sensible alternative, especially for the warmer season or for parents who are intentionally looking for a baby blanket made of cotton.

And with the Forest motif by Bengt & Lotta, it remains unmistakably Klippan: Scandinavian, playful, and child-friendly, without appearing kitschy.
