Tree Climbers – a wool baby blanket by Bengt & Lotta

The Tree Climbers wool baby blanket really comes to life. Small forest creatures inhabit the graphic pattern, making the blanket a quintessential piece of Scandinavian children's textile.

The design is by Bengt Lindberg and Lotta Glave – better known as Bengt & Lotta. The Swedish designer duo has worked intensively with Klippan for many years and is known for their clear, humorous animal and nature motifs.

50% recycled lambswool

However, the real highlight of the Tree Climbers wool baby blanket for me is the material. Klippan crafts it from 50% recycled lambswool and 50% lambswool.

The recycled wool is not just any purchased recycled raw material. Klippan uses wool scraps generated during their own production, returning this high-quality natural material back into the production cycle.

This is a form of recycling that is immediately tangible: existing lambswool is not disposed of, but processed into new yarn and ultimately into a new wool blanket.

Each batch can look slightly different

The use of wool scraps has an interesting consequence: Klippan cannot guarantee identical colors and color combinations for every production batch of its recycled wool products.

The shades present in the recycled yarn depend on the wool scraps available from ongoing production at the time of manufacture.

Slight color deviations compared to our product images or a previous delivery are therefore not a quality defect. They are part of the character of the recycled material and make every production batch slightly different.

50% new and 50% reused lambswool

Klippan combines the recycled wool fibers with 50% lambswool. This ensures that Tree Climbers remains a genuine wool blanket with the typical properties of this natural material.

Wool possesses natural temperature- and moisture-regulating properties. It keeps you pleasantly warm while also being able to absorb moisture and release it into the environment.

This is particularly interesting for a baby blanket: wool should not simply trap as much heat as possible, but rather contribute to a comfortable climate.

65 x 90 cm – the classic baby size

At 65 x 90 cm, Tree Climbers is a classic wool baby blanket. The compact format is very well-suited for prams and cradles and is easy to take along when on the move.

The size is also practical at home – for covering up, snuggling, or as a small wool blanket in the nursery.

At Klippan, we therefore consciously distinguish between sizes: 65 x 90 cm is the baby format. The larger 90 x 130 cm blankets are suitable as larger children's blankets or as lap blankets for adults.

Bengt & Lotta and Klippan

Bengt Lindberg and Lotta Glave are among the designers with whom Klippan collaborates particularly closely. Their designs can be found on numerous wool blankets, cotton textiles, and home accessories from the Swedish manufacturer.

Klippan also distributes products from the Bengt & Lotta brand internationally. The collaboration thus goes well beyond individual design commissions.

Tree Climbers is a beautiful example of the designer duo's typical signature style: nature and animals are reduced to simple graphic shapes, resulting in a playful pattern.

Recycling where it makes sense

When it comes to the term "recycled," I am generally in favor of taking a closer look. Ultimately, what matters is which material is recycled and where it comes from.

In Klippan's case, this is easy to explain: wool and yarn scraps are an inevitable part of manufacturing wool textiles. Instead of leaving these high-quality natural fibers unused, Klippan collects them and processes them into new products.

This reduces material waste and continues to make use of a raw material that already exists. To me, this is much more meaningful than a recycling claim without an explanation of origin.

Klippan Yllefabrik – expertise in wool since 1879

Klippan Yllefabrik is a Swedish family business whose history dates back to 1879. Its headquarters remain in the town of Klippan in southern Sweden to this day.

What began as simple wool processing has evolved over generations into a manufacturer known today especially for wool blankets and other home textiles made from natural materials.

In-house production in Latvia

Manufacturing takes place at the subsidiary Klippan Saule in Latvia. There, Klippan operates modern machinery and controls the essential steps of wool processing itself.

Klippan purchases natural fibers and handles the spinning, dyeing, warping, weaving, and brushing within its own production facility.

It is precisely this that makes it possible to reclaim the wool scraps generated during production and use them for new products.

Care – 30 °C on the wool cycle

Wool should not be washed more often than necessary. Regular airing and careful shaking are often enough to refresh the blanket.

If washing becomes necessary, Klippan recommends machine washing Tree Climbers at 30 °C exclusively on the wool cycle. The blanket should be washed separately and not tumble dried. Bleach is not suitable.

My assessment

For me, Tree Climbers is particularly interesting among the Klippan baby blankets because of the material. 50% of the lambswool used comes from scraps from their own production, giving the material a second life.

I especially appreciate that Klippan does not hide the consequence of this: depending on which yarn scraps are available, the colors of a new production batch may vary slightly.

Added to this is the classic 65 x 90 cm baby format and a design by Bengt & Lotta. The blanket thus combines high-quality Scandinavian textile design with a very concrete form of material reuse.
