The classic Glerups for indoors
For me, Model A with the leather sole is the classic Glerups. The closed wool felt shoe fully encloses the foot while remaining soft and flexible.
The shape follows the foot and provides the toes with sufficient freedom of movement. Combined with the thin, flexible leather sole, this creates a very direct and natural walking sensation.
100% natural wool – comfortable even without socks
The upper material consists of 100% pure, natural wool. Wool can absorb a lot of moisture, thereby supporting a pleasantly balanced foot climate. At the same time, it provides excellent insulation against the cold.
This is one of the reasons why Glerups are so comfortable worn directly against the skin. Those who like walking without socks get a shoe with Model A that warms the foot without enclosing it in a rigid shoe construction.
Soft leather sole for a direct walking sensation
The sole is made of soft, supple, chrome-free leather. It protects the wool felt while walking while remaining flexible enough for the foot to continue to clearly perceive the ground.
This is what intentionally distinguishes this version from the model with the natural rubber sole. The leather sole is intended primarily for apartments and houses. Anyone wanting to wear their Glerups regularly on the patio, in the garden, or while out and about should rather choose the version with the natural rubber sole.
Light on the foot
Depending on the shoe size, a pair weighs only about 309 to 445 g. This low weight fits the entire concept: as little rigid construction as possible between the foot and the ground.
Especially when you wear the shoe at home for many hours, I find this to be a great advantage. You aren't walking in a heavy slipper, but rather have the feeling that the wool simply moves with the foot.
Care – Wool needs surprisingly little
Wool naturally possesses properties that make frequent washing usually unnecessary. Most of the time, it is enough to air out your Glerups regularly.
Light soiling can be carefully treated with a damp cloth and a cleaning agent suitable for wool. Then allow the shoes to dry completely at room temperature.
From Nanny Glerup's idea to the Danish wool shoe
The story of Glerups began with Nanny Glerup and self-felted wool shoes. This turned into a company in 1993. To this day, wool forms the foundation of Glerups products.
The shoes are developed in Denmark and manufactured in Glerups' own factory in Romania.
My assessment
If a pair of Glerups is really to be worn primarily indoors, I would reach for the leather sole. It is lighter and softer than the natural rubber sole and therefore provides an even more direct walking sensation.
For me, that is the strength of this model. Model A does not try to turn a wool shoe into a classic, firm shoe. Wool, an anatomical shape, and the flexible leather sole give the foot as much freedom as possible.
Those, however, who also want to regularly step outside in their Glerups are better served with the natural rubber sole. Thus, both versions have their clear justification.
