More than a classic slipper
The Glerups Model A is an enclosed wool felt shoe designed to follow the natural contours of the foot. It fully encloses the foot without forcing it into a rigid shoe structure.
For me, this is precisely what constitutes a significant part of the special Glerups feeling. The shoe is lightweight and flexible, allowing the foot plenty of natural freedom of movement. Those who enjoy walking barefoot will quickly appreciate this direct walking experience.
100% natural wool – comfortable even without socks
The upper is made of 100% pure, natural wool. Wool can absorb a great deal of moisture, thereby contributing to a pleasantly balanced foot climate. At the same time, it provides insulation against the cold.
This makes Glerups excellent to wear without socks. The wool sits directly against the foot, creating a very different wearing experience compared to a classic slipper with a textile lining or synthetic upper.
This also makes the shoe interesting for a surprisingly large part of the year: warm when it’s cool, and still comfortable for the foot due to the natural properties of the wool.
Natural rubber sole – making Glerups suitable for outdoors
The flexible natural rubber sole significantly extends the range of use for the classic Glerups. This makes Model A not only intended for inside the home, but also suitable for light outdoor use.
Patio, garden, campsite, holiday home, the trip to the mailbox, or a quick run to the store – these are all situations where the rubber sole proves its advantage over the classic leather sole.
It is also an interesting choice for those looking for an uncomplicated wool shoe while camping, at the beach, or when fishing. Of course, the Glerups is not a technical hiking or waterproof outdoor shoe – but that is exactly what it does not aim to be.
Natural walking experience instead of a stiff shoe structure
Glerups does without much of what makes a conventional shoe stiff. The wool construction and flexible sole are able to adapt to the foot and allow for a very direct walking experience.
This is why I wouldn't simply view Model A as a warm felt slipper. For me, its real strength lies in the combination of wool, freedom of movement, and a sole that significantly expands its range of use.
Care – with wool, less is usually more
Wool possesses natural self-cleaning properties. Glerups therefore recommends primarily airing the shoes out and letting them rest.
Stains can be treated carefully with a slightly damp cloth and wool soap. The natural rubber sole can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Afterwards, allow the shoe to dry completely.
Note: Natural rubber soles can be slippery on wet or icy smooth surfaces.
The history of Glerups
The story of the Danish brand began with Nanny Glerup and hand-felted wool shoes. Since the early 1990s, Glerups has developed from this idea.
To this day, wool remains the focus of the products. The models are designed in Denmark and manufactured in the Glerups’ own factory in Romania.
My assessment
For me, Model A with the natural rubber sole is the Glerups that best demonstrates why these shoes shouldn't simply be pigeonholed as "slippers."
You can wear them at home, slip into them without socks, and simultaneously head out to the patio, the garden, or while camping. The wool ensures a distinctly pleasant foot climate, and the flexible construction gives the foot plenty of freedom.
If you are expecting a stiff, heavily cushioned shoe, you are looking for the wrong product here. However, those who like wool and appreciate the most natural walking experience possible should take a closer look at Glerups.
