The art is in the balance

A Flensted mobile appears light and effortless – but it is precisely this lightness that requires a great deal of experience. The weight, distance, shape, and suspension of the individual elements must be coordinated in such a way that the mobile maintains its balance while simultaneously reacting to the slightest movement of air. This knowledge of kinetic balance has defined the Flensted family's work for generations.

Flensted Mobiles – family history since 1953

The story began in 1953, when Christian and Grethe Flensted created a stork mobile for their daughter Mette's christening. This personal idea led to the birth of Flensted Mobiles. To this day, the mobiles are handcrafted and assembled in Denmark on the island of Funen. Frederiksminde, the old schoolhouse near Brenderup, has been closely linked to the company and the Flensted family for decades.

The designs draw their inspiration from nature, art, classic design, and aesthetics. The interplay of form, movement, and balance always remains a defining characteristic.

My assessment

I chose this mobile because the motif, proportions, and movement work together in a particularly harmonious way. During my visit to Ole Flensted at Frederiksminde, it became clear to me once again how much experience lies behind a balance that ultimately seems completely natural. It is precisely this combination of design and technical skill that I value in Flensted.
