Winter Stories – when porcelain tells stories
Winter Stories was the collection with which Dottir achieved its breakthrough. Animals, trees, mushrooms and candlelight form small Nordic winter landscapes. The pieces work individually, but can also be added to over the years to create your own winter world.
Dottir Nordic Design – little stories made of porcelain
Dottir Nordic Design was founded in Denmark in 2009 and was initially called Finnsdottir. The brand was born from a love of ceramics and focuses on porcelain objects that do not just decorate, but tell little stories.
The pieces are made by hand in many steps: the porcelain is cast, processed and polished; complex designs are assembled by hand from several small parts, then glazed and fired at high temperatures. Small differences in shape, surface and glaze are therefore part of the artisanal character and are not a defect in quality.
Glaze and craftsmanship
The special effect is created by the contrast between light porcelain and glazed details. Dottir works with transparent, deep-acting glazes and fires the pieces for strength and expression. I deliberately refer to the items as hand-finished rather than "hand-painted" across the board – this describes the documented manufacturing process more accurately.
My assessment
For me, Winter Stories is Dottir's strongest series. What I particularly like about the hedgehog is that nature is not simply printed on as a motif, but emerges as a small three-dimensional scene. With candlelight, the effect changes once again. It is precisely this mix of Nordic nature, porcelain and atmosphere that is the reason why I deliberately chose this series.
