Dotbird – the dotty bird by Bengt & Lotta

With the Dotbird, a bird is transformed into an almost abstract graphic object. The black silhouette is lightened by dots, circles, and cutouts, giving it a unique structure.

Despite this significant simplification, the bird remains immediately recognizable. It is precisely this interplay between a simple animal figure and a graphic pattern that makes this bird so interesting to me.

26.5 cm tall and 30 cm wide

Dotbird is not one of the smaller Bengt & Lotta candle holders. At 26.5 cm high and 30 cm wide, it has enough presence for a sideboard, a dresser, a windowsill, or a larger table.

The weight of 1,350 g is also worth mentioning. The many cutouts make the design appear relatively light in photos, but in reality, you receive a solid steel candle holder.

Candle holder and graphic object

Dotbird works well even when no candle is lit. Because of its size and striking black silhouette, the bird acts as an independent graphic object in the room.

When a candle is lit, a second layer is added: the light hits the cutout areas and emphasizes the unusual structure of the design.

A different look at the animal motif

Animals have played an important role for Bengt & Lotta from the very beginning. Bengt Lindberg's early designs started with a cow; later, sheep, horses, and the now particularly famous moose followed, among others.

Dotbird shows very beautifully how far this idea can be developed. Here, the simple animal silhouette is no longer the sole focus. The bird simultaneously becomes a surface for a graphic pattern.

My assessment

For me, the dotty bird is one of the Bengt & Lotta candle holders where you notice the form first and the function only afterward. With a width of 30 cm and a weight of 1.35 kg, it is a genuine design object rather than a small home accessory.

I particularly like the contrast between the massive construction and the many open spaces. This makes Dotbird look visually light, even though you have an amazingly solid candle holder in front of you. This is hard to convey online – which is why I consider the weight specification particularly important for this model.
