The Horse – a classic by Bengt Lindberg
The horse is one of Bengt Lindberg's early animal motifs and is therefore part of the history of Bengt & Lotta. His first designs featured a cow, followed later by a sheep, a horse, and a moose. From these highly simplified animal figures, a graphic signature developed that remains typical of Bengt & Lotta to this day.
With The Horse trivet, the horse itself becomes the shape of the object. The motif is not simply printed onto a metal plate – the cut-out black silhouette forms the trivet itself.
400 g of steel for the set table
At 17.8 × 17.8 cm, the trivet has a practical size for pots, pans, and hot serving dishes. It protects the table or work surface underneath and can be easily wiped clean after use.
The weight is interesting: at 400 g, The Horse is a quite substantial metal object despite its open silhouette. This detail is particularly helpful when buying online, as weight and material thickness are difficult to gauge from a product photo.
A functional object that deserves to be seen
A trivet is primarily a very simple kitchen helper. With The Horse, design is added to the mix: when there is no hot pot on it, the black horse silhouette remains visible as a small graphic object on the table or work surface.
This is a quality I particularly appreciate in Scandinavian everyday design. Functional objects are designed in such a way that you don't necessarily want to hide them in a drawer after every use.
My assessment
With The Horse trivet, I wouldn't even try to make more of a simple kitchen product than what it is. It is meant to keep a hot pot off the table – and it fulfills that task perfectly.
The difference from an ordinary trivet lies in the design. The horse is one of Bengt Lindberg's classic motifs, and the function of the product arises directly from the animal figure. For me, this is a very beautiful combination of utility and design.
