Couple – a pair for the set table
With the Couple trivet, Bengt & Lotta turn a simple kitchen tool into a small graphic object. The black silhouette shows two people as a couple and remains as minimalist as one would expect from the metal designs of the Swedish designer duo.
The motif works particularly well on a set table: instead of placing a neutral trivet under a pot, pan, or serving bowl, the trivet itself becomes part of the table setting.
17.8 × 17.8 cm – practical for everyday use
Measuring 17.8 × 17.8 cm, the Couple trivet offers a compact surface for hot cooking and serving dishes. It protects sensitive table and work surfaces and can be easily wiped clean after use.
Thanks to its flat metal construction, the trivet also requires little storage space. However, it can just as easily be left out in the kitchen—the Couple motif is, after all, far too nice to be hidden away.
Function over mere decoration
A trivet is a perfect example of what I appreciate about many Scandinavian products: an object does not have to be either practical or decorative.
The Couple trivet has a very clear task in everyday life. Bengt & Lotta transform this function into a graphic design without compromising its practical utility.
A little gift idea for couples
Because of its Couple motif, the trivet is also suitable as a gift for weddings, housewarmings, or for a couple. The design remains pleasantly understated: no hearts, no lettering, and no excessive romance—simply two people as a black silhouette.
My assessment
Trivets are among those things you actually need, but rarely give much thought to when it comes to design. That is exactly why I like this piece.
Couple fulfills a very simple function first and foremost: to keep hot pots off the table. On top of that, Bengt & Lotta have turned it into an item you don't have to hide away in a drawer after your meal. For me, this is highly typical of good Scandinavian everyday design.
