With the Coffee napkin holder, Bengt & Lotta turn an everyday situation into a small design object: people sitting together at a table, drinking coffee, and taking time for each other.
This makes the motif a wonderful fit for the Swedish Fika. This is not just about a cup of coffee and a pastry, but also about pausing everyday life for a moment and spending time together.
The napkins become part of the motif
As with the other napkin holders from Bengt & Lotta, the decoration is also its function. The black silhouette forms the frame for the paper napkins and gives them a set place on the table.
The effect of the holder changes depending on which napkins are used. Solid-colored, patterned, or seasonal napkins always provide a different background for the black coffee scene.

My assessment
With Coffee, you don't really need a complicated design story. The motif tells you exactly what it's about: sitting together, drinking coffee, and talking to each other.
Once you understand the Swedish Fika culture, you appreciate this design even more. The napkin holder is an everyday item for the table that simultaneously illustrates exactly the situation in which it is needed. This combination of humor and function is, for me, very typical of Bengt & Lotta.
